Faros Takeaway - Islington

I 'm surprized to find this page. Faros takeaway was my favourite fish and chip shop for years but that was a long time ago and it closed down over 10 years ago. I remember the place had a sign that said. Home of the yerros . Yerros is the Greek word for kebab. I used to go in there for a yerros with the good old fish and chips wrapped in paper the old school way and a bottle of Saxby 's ginger beer. The place closed it 's doors some time in the early 2000 's and was eventually demolished. Today 85 Maitland Road is a parking place next to a latte lair. Islington has changed a lot since I first came to Newcastle in 1982. Around about 2005 I saw the Greek lady that worked there or owned the place at a medical centre I used to go to. I don 't know if she recognised me and I didn 't have the nerve to approach her. Just before Faros Takeaway closed Islington takeaway was set up across the road in what used to be a 'corner store '. Last year it closed down suddenly and was turned into another latte lair earlier this year. I suspect that the good old fish and chip shops might be fading out. I wonder if any one else remembers places like The Parthenon Milk bar.
