We were not sure which ones we would like, so we order each of them. The peanut one and the green tea one were my favorite. Definitely will come back to collect all the flavors again.
I’ve been to the Japantown in San Jose for a few times but didn’t realize there’s a confectionery until yesterday. I guess the reason is that I always went there in the evening in the past and Sheui-Do would have already sold out their mochis of the day by early afternoon, so I had never seen the long line in front of the store. As a first timer, I ordered a tray of 8 (it also comes with choice of 4 or 6) instead of a box of 10 count or more. It’s just me and it’s recommended to finish theses mochis within 3 days under room temp (68-75°F). My personal favorites are butter mochi , kinako, and brown inaka. Compared to the American desserts, it’s less sweet but may still contain much sugar to weight-concerned groups. Try it out with a small tray with one of each flavor and buy a large box of your favorites or for a big gathering. I saw many people walking away with 3-5 boxes in hand.
Yummy! Fresh and soft. My favorite is the Chi Chi Dango. This place is among the few surviving manju/mochi shops we gladly support whenever in the area.
Shuei-Do is truly a treasure. They make super fresh, super consistent, super delicious traditional Japanese rice treats. If you know what manju is, then you already know this place is the best. If you don't know what it is, then do yourself a favor and go try some.
I was blown away by the taste of these mochis - they were far superior to the typical mass-produced ones you find in stores. They were incredibly soft and perfectly sweet. The price was quite reasonable considering the quality of the food. I made sure to visit the store right when it opened in the morning to avoid any long waits, and I was able to get my food in no time. My friends and I enjoyed the 6 mochis over three days, and even on the third day, the texture was still perfect. I wish I lived in the Bay Area so I could enjoy these treats more frequently.
