Tanoshi is my favorite traditional omakase (chef 's choice) sushi bar in the entire city. And that 's a BOLD statement. This 12 seater sushi bar only has 3 seatings per night, and you need to make the reservation at least 2 weeks in advance, and it 's SO WORTH IT. Each piece of sushi is specially prepared just for you in front of you. And then the next piece isn 't prepared until you 've finished the piece before seriously so fresh and such great quality, each piece melts in your mouth. I 've been to Tanoshi at least 8 times by this point, and it has never disappointed. The Slightly Seared King Salmon, Amberjack with Cherry Blossom Leaf, Triple X (uni ikura quail egg combo) are my absolute favorites! The Seared Salmon with Ponzu appetizer and their super rich Miso Soup are amazing complements as well. 10 pieces of the highest quality sushi, half a roll plus a hand roll for $75 is pretty worth it in my books. Seriously in love with this place and already made a follow up reservation to try their 'special ' omakase for my birthday in two weeks. They say the special omakase includes fish ordered and shipped straight from Tsukiji Market in Japan!!!! CANNOT WAIT!<br/ <br/ Favorites: Amberjack, Triple X
I know that NYC isn’t a gastronomic place but, this restaurant is one of the best Japanese that I’ve ever tried in USA. DEFINITELY A MUST! You should bring your drink and enjoy the meal. Just amazing
I’d say this is one of the best affordable omakase spots in the city. Almost want to gate keep it but I think it’s getting quite popular lately. It is super authentic sushi very fresh fish and the seasonings added to some of the nigiris are divine just complements the fish’s flavor and reminds me of home a lot. The itamae san is an old Japanese guy not very talkative but you can tell he is a shokunin san dedicated to his craft. Also its byob and theres a liquor store next door.
During a solo trip to NYC I decided to venture from the UWS to the UES for this small and unassuming sushi bar. The style is omakase and it was truly an experience. You are greeted at the door with your name on a list, then sat at the bar for one of only 3 seatings per night (make a reservation in advance). I met and mingled with such interesting and unique individuals it was an incredible experience. The staff were so friendly and kind. They got me to try things that were out of my comfort zone sushi wise and I was so glad they did. The perfect spot for solo travelers or a couple’s date night. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would.
