My first venture into Manhattan's NoMad district was this appropriately named place. It's dark, tight, and loud in here but it's also a good, fun, and vibrant hipster place for a boys' night out on the town. It's a bit too loud for what I would call a date night place, and I think it's louder than your typical Japanese izakayas. But this is NYC isn't it, ha. The food quality is also tip top good here, and I'm in no position to judge prices as what I think may be a little pricey may actually be reasonable in Manhattan. Anyway on to the food and drink. My nephew and I had a foodies' izakaya dinner: For drinks, nephew had a high ball and I had an old fashioned and an Orion draft beer. It turned out to be the cheapest old fashioned of my 3 day trip at only $16, woot woot, and good too! For food, it was an assortment to try out their menu: beef tataki assorted tempura vegetables chicken meat balls with egg yolk yakitori skewers of chicken thigh, chicken skin (kawa), and beef short rib salmon 2 uni rolls shishito peppers oyster mushrooms It was all delicious and a fun dinner.
Finally a place where we can call home, the aromen, the menu, the will and the food?. the asparabacon and? bacon was imposingly well done, I missed the click of the tsukune, but that was also great? they don't get the joy to make the okonomiyaki on their own faust, but the taste is great. highly recommended authentic izakaya?
The food was good. uni sushi was the best for $10 per pop. the chicken skin, rinder tataki and odansuppe was the highlight. my weight is that it was too fast, it was a bit overpriced for what it was, and the drinks were a bit watered. I felt like I was running in one to finish eating before it got cold. at the end I was so full and didn't know what I was eating. the waiter was honest and said at the beginning he had no control over the tempo.
Eating no longer resembles real izakaya. manager tried to convince me that uncooked pigs were made right. plating was sloppy and service was hardly sufficient. I cannot recommend this restaurant and would say that izakaya mew can train these young in the right food service and cook. I will not go back and tell all my friends to avoid it.
