I go to this restaurant often. The dishes are meat oriented and are rather heavy, except the "mittagssalad" (wich i recommend). During lunch time they have repetative dishes, some are great, some (mostly the non traditional) are so so. Their Schnitzels are very good, especially Müchner Schnitzel (with mustard inside). The atmosphere is typical bavarian (maybe it's Austrian, i dont know), plus you will have your clothes smelling like food due to permanently open kitchen door. The service is really traditional which means super impolite. Maybe it's because of the restaurant being understaffed. They have happy hour in the evening, for beer and certain food. It's a good place for lazy lunch or an evening beer or Schnitzel, could be open a bit longer than 10pm though:)
Authentic Bavarian cooking in a small, friendly spot off of the beaten path. Daily specials are always worth trying. Happy hours are a bargain. Cash only, no credit cards.
This place deserves 5 stars for its food. Its not luxurious or sophisticated and its not fine-dining. Tables and chairs plus other furnishings are functional rather than plush. But go there for the food which is freshly prepared and is great tasting. The restaurant offers a selection of hearty and authentic German and Austrian dishes on the menu plus a blackboard with some 'specials'. The restaurant when we were there on a Tuesday evening gradually filled up with people - all German - and it was clear that many were regulars. A good sign! It is a place where the atmosphere is generated by the customers and where meeting friends for a drink and a meal is the order of the day. So don't expect a quiet subdued ambiance! Our waitress was friendly and helpful: she spoke no English but made an effort to explain the dishes and made sure we were OK with what was served. Just as it should be. There are some aspects that a good number of more expensive restaurants could learn from this establishment.I enjoyed my meal here considerably more than in some of the more pricey tourist-haunts in central Munich.
Hi, I have been trying countless restaurants in Munich, and I keep coming back at Smaillinger. Simply put: great food made by an experienced cook, nice service, nice atmosphere. Some traditional dishes are presented with a twist, like the schnitzel "paniert" with pumpkin seeds. Especially suggested is the "Schnitzel day" on Thursday evening. Prices are ok.
