Even though the waitresses were incredibly friendly and upbeat, it couldn't make up for the fact that service was slow. We spent a huge chunk of our night hailing down the waitress and waiting to be served. Food was ok but not great. The smoked duck was not tender nor smoky- don't get it as you have to pay extra. The highlight of my meal was probably the iceberg salad- had I known the best dish out of my upscale sugar shack experience would have been greens I would have skipped the one-hour drive and walked over to Mandy's. But to be fair- portions are pretty generous and I liked their creative cocktails. They promote local products through their menu which is awesome. I really hope they can improve as I love a good twist on traditional sugar shacks.
Prepare for a very long wait if you decide to visit La Tablee Des Pionniers. It seems they overbook their reservations, much like airlines do with flight tickets. Adding to the frustration, there simply aren't enough servers and cooks to handle the number of diners they are trying to accommodate. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but even with a prepaid reservation made months in advance, you might find yourself waiting outside or in the lobby for nearly an hour before getting a table—yes, you read that right. This may sound unbelievable, but it happened to us as well as others who arrived around the same time. We were really looking forward to dining here, having heard great things from a friend and seen all the five-star reviews on Yelp. However, perhaps those positive reviews are outdated or it was just an exceptionally bad day for the restaurant. As for the food, it didn’t resemble the pictures others posted from two or more years ago. After all the waiting, we didn’t have much of an appetite, so I didn’t take any photos. The food was okay, but almost everything was a bit too sweet for my taste, especially the beans and meat.
My last visit here was 3+years ago was when it was known as Sucerie Millette. Back then the food was sloppy and the atmosphere kitsch-y. So you can imagine my dread as it was suggested to try it out again, but now under new ownership. Well...simply put..the food is outstanding! It's still pretty much the exact same place, but they have polished up the kitchen and it feels more like a family restaurant, than some tourist trap. They offer 3 different menus for all the parties at the table to eat at the same time. We opted for the $40 menu and I will say that I never ate so good with so much. From the pea soup, the wedge salad, the egg soufflé, the meat platter, the rabbit, and the finally bread pudding for desert. It was all incredibly good. We ended up with 3 boxes of leftovers! And of course, kids loving going to the sugar shack in the back for maple taffy in the snow. I would have liked to see a more lively/festive environment to have topped it off. But there was a lumberjack-type guy singing Johnny Cash in his Quebecoise that made it memorable. I will bring my friends from out of town to this place. So glad that it has revived. Highly recommended.
Amazing and authentic place to try. The passion for food here is off the charts. Every server and staff was knowledgeable about what they are offering and the location and ambiance is warm and welcoming. I recommend getting the largest menu offered, I cannot wait to come back.
If I could give this place less than one star, I definitely would. It was a terrible experience! The only redeeming dish was the pea soup—how can you go wrong with that? Unfortunately, the tortiere was overprocessed and tasted awful, like baby food. Even the eggs were overcooked. The biggest disappointment, though, was finding table syrup on the table instead of real maple syrup, especially in a cabane à sucre! The waitress even acknowledged that it should have been real syrup. I will never return. Additionally, there is absolutely no handicap access, and my guest had to navigate slippery, ice-covered steps to get to the area. I’m so disappointed that this is in my neighborhood!
