Definitely make a reservation although there were only two people seated and no line and their website claims to have space reserved for those coming in for a drink but not eating, the staff made a big deal out of finding us a table. We were initially seated at a high top that was too high for my short legs. When we asked for a regular table, they seemed put out and ushered us to one but told us we couldn 't stay long as they needed the table for people with dinner reservations. Take the walk ins always welcome claim with a grain of salt. It definitely helps to be able bodied and not plus sized if you 're heading here, as tables are very close together making it hard to access the bench along the wall and chairs have armrests that will make it a tight squeeze for some. There are two single toilet restrooms, one for men and one for women. Those who don 't identify as either are presumably required to hold it. This is not the place for picky eaters or those with food allergies, but you 'll no doubt find something to whet your palate on their extensive wine menu. If you like the taste of burnt coffee, check out their espresso martini. They claim to pay their workers $20 an hour, which is comendable, but also have a built in 20% gratuity. I would be more comfortable with an increase in prices and a tip optional policy as the existence of tipping culture enables most restaurants to pay servers a mere pittance, but I suppose you have to start somewhere. Kabinett 's commitment to their workers is its biggest selling point and goes a long way in making up for its shortcomings. I do have to ask, though what is with all the pears decorating the wall?
We visited Kabinett for the second time recently for a couple glasses of wine and small plates to celebrate a late Valentine's day. Our first experience here last summer was wonderful where I had one of the most delicious dishes I can remember, the chicken pate. It came in a ramekin with toasted brioche and it was fantastic. We also had a lovely sardine appetizer that we were hoping was still on the menu when we returned. We sat at the bar and when asking for the pate was told that it had been replaced by the chicken toast, which, lucky us, was debuting this very night. We ordered that, the sardine toast and the hollumi. The chicken pate toast was perhaps the most visually unappealing food I have ever seen served at a restaurant. It was a piece of brioche topped with pate that was squeezed out in such a way that it literally looked like dogs droppings. While it tasted OK, the under toasted bread topped with the loose pate made for a soggy dish. The sardine toast was somewhat less appetizing with 4 little, mealy, sour fish each atop a piece of stale focaccia overloaded with oil. The hollumi was the best thing we ordered, but the tahini smeared on the plate tasted like fat on top of fat where some contrast would have helped. The restaurant is quite pretty and the wine list is extensive with lots of wine by the glass. But service to get drinks was very slow and by no means informative about the wines. We sat at the bar and unless you happened to be able to catch the server's eye as they casually stood nearby, you were not getting any drinks. That being said, everyone working there seemed very pleasant. We don't mind spending money on great food, any we usually do tip at least 20%, but the food wasn't great and the server while pleasant was not attentive and offered nothing extra for the wine experience. So the consumer now pays 20% on wine that is already marked up 300% over retail--it is mark-up, upon mark-up and there isn't any value added.
This is an incredible place to go enjoy food made by chefs who are always trying new things and blending flavors and cultures. If you are a wine enthusiast this is the best selection of bottles you’ll find in PA! There’s even private dining through a hidden wardrobe and Sunday Suppers are not to be missed!
My hubby and I had dinner here last night for the second time. It never fails to disappoint! The food is delicious, unique, and creative from appetizer to dessert. Top notch. Kudos to the chefs here! The service was equally as wonderful and our server Naomi was fantastic! Loved her! Wine list is second to none. Highly recommend!
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in the area. The food is incredible and the wine options are unparalleled.
