The burger was fantastic, and the two soups—beef noodle and potato—were so delicious that I wished I could take a bucket of each home! We also tried the bierock, and we ended up taking four home with us. Dining here felt like having grandma serve us from her own kitchen. If you're in the area, you definitely need to check it out!
From Main Street, right across from the Oz Museum, you can follow the Yellow Brick Road, passing by Oz-themed murals and greeting a couple of adorable Toto statues along the way. At the end of the road, you'll discover the Friendship House, which is an old home that has been converted for dining. It seems like only the kitchen was significantly updated, as the rest of the place still retains its cozy, home-like feel with tables of various sizes scattered throughout. When you sit down, you can check the chalkboard for daily specials or wait for Margaret to come by and fill you in. While waiting, there’s plenty of interesting history about Wamego to read, unless you prefer looking over the menu. Did you know that Walter P. Chrysler, the founder of the Chrysler automobile company, was born here? Margaret can share more fascinating tidbits about the town. Now, onto the food! While the chicken strawberry salad and homemade soups sounded tempting, I opted for the mushroom Swiss burger. I knew it didn’t come with fries, and I thought that would help me avoid overeating. I should have anticipated that the bread would be homemade, as everything seems to be! Everyone at our table enjoyed their meals. I even caught a glimpse of a salad from another diner, and yes, the croutons looked homemade too. I was very tempted by the cinnamon rolls topped with creamy frosting, but I held back; the burger alone was quite filling. As for the prices, they were very reasonable. When it’s time to pay, you take your ticket to the register and wait while others deliberate between the cookies, bars, brownies, pecan cinnamon rolls, and kolaches they want to take home. It's clear from the selection that the food is so good you’ll want to enjoy it later. We waited a moment behind a few people making their delicious choices, but it was pouring rain outside, and the cozy atmosphere kept us content. If you're driving along I-70 and want to make a brief detour for a taste of charming Americana, I highly recommend taking the 15-minute trip to Wamego. Dining at the Friendship House and visiting the Oz Museum makes for a delightful 3-4 hour stop—without the long lines or crowds you'd expect at a Disney park. Plus, the scenic Flint Hills leading you in are beautiful! People really should visit before they say anything negative about Kansas.
It felt like stepping into my grandfather's house—so warm and inviting! Everything, from the food to our waitress, was simply fantastic. The dishes tasted incredibly fresh, as if they had just gone out back to butcher the pig and collect the eggs that morning. Margaret, our server, was absolutely lovely. She truly made our experience perfect, going above and beyond to ensure we felt welcomed during our first visit.
What a charming spot! The staff were friendly and clearly skilled, as the cookies and cinnamon roll we tried were absolutely fantastic! I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning!
We had a wonderful experience at the restaurant! Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, especially Ms. Margret, the owner, and the tall cookie man. The food was outstanding, definitely a 10 out of 10! Blake and Kim from Georgia.
