Sit inside if you want, but on the balcony you can enjoy the city pass by and admire the wonderful architecture. But you came for the food! Ok, it's not fancy, but it is very very good. The Pate de Campagne is a delightfully savory first course and the serving is just the right size, The local Toulouse sausage is fery flavorful, but perhaps a bit dry for American tastes, but the sauce spooned into the depression in the mashed potatoes (lumpy and homey...the way I like them) is something I could live on. Dip the sausage into the sauce and you are home free! Oh, then there is desert...The Gateau au Chocolat is among the best cakes I have ever tasted. Dark and rich, not too sweet. A crisp outer layer encloses wonderfully moist cake, with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel on the side...what more could you ask. All of that comes with a half of wine, not a half bottle, but a half liter...so beware. This is all sourced on the floor below, in the market. The service is warm and friendly in an easy going French way. The servers are busy and efficient, but always ready to take care of you. This wonderfulness does come at a price though...12.90 euros, including the wine and service. I should have gone more often!
As Americans, we found this place quite interesting. Some reasons why: we sat at a community table and chatted with some locals during the meal; the kind lady serving us had some comments about our order and how little we ate; and they have interesting fare, like duck hearts. The food was obviously high quality, but be mindful that the meat will be served very very rare unless you specify in detail how well done you want it. (And then the kind lady will question why you are ruining the meat with so much heat.) Would definitely return for another meal.
This restaurant is right above the market in Toulouse and has outdoor seating overlooking the street. They offer fantastic value during lunch - a 3 course menu for 19 euro, and a 3 course menu with different dishes for 26 euro. We took the 19 euro menu and were absolutely stuffed! we couldn't even finish the desserts. The bavette cut was delicious and perfectly cooked. My friend ordered the Toulouse sausage and it was (surprise!) served with lots of Foie Gras on top!
You can find this little gem above the market amongst another few restaurants which to be honest all looked pretty good.Firstly! They close at around 1:30 mid week and are closed all day Monday. So get there early and get a seat on the balcony. The food is really good, home made quality and plenty of it for a great price. Some of the salad starters would be big enough for some peoples main course. A three course meal with wine was around €24 euros each.
Victor Hugo Market restaurants are famous and I selected this one because a pretty waitress smiled at me. Ate at noon so declined the offer of an aperitif or wine.Had a mushroom pate starter which was quite bland followed by entrecôte steak in a tasty wine sauce. The French version of medium-rare with blood oozing from it. Yummy! The waitresses were busy but capable and both starter and main meal arrived promptly.Very reasonable given the location with the entire meal costing less than €20.
