Royal Hotel Toowoomba

I recently tried the Royal Hotel for lunch to try it out over our normal venues. The hotel has quite good access, with off street parking behind the hotel. The decor has been modernised as most hotels have been in recent years, and while pleasant, has no particular stand out features. The staff were pleasant,and helpful, and the dining area clean and well presented. As the dining room is at the rear of the building, the view is largely over the carpark area, but also looks across the Gowrie Ck valley. I enjoyed the bangers and mash, which I feel is a good test of a pub. The pork snags were thick, and properly cooked without being dry, and the meal overall was a good portion size. The meal itself was served in a large soup bowl, and featured mash, peas, gravy and 2 thick pork snags. While good overall, there was nothing bad, or exceptional about the offering. The stand out of the meal was the caramelised onions, which was sweet, gooey, and delicious. Almost to an onion marmalade standard. I could easily go back for this alone. I saw couples and family groups (with young kids) also enjoying lunch there. May not be the best pub lunch in town, but certainly not the worst. I would eat here again.

Despite being located in the matrix hotel, the Wildflower Grill was surprisingly good.

Wow -- this place is great! First, I was with two colleagues from work during a break between two meetings we were facilitating in the Matrix Hotel.

I always enjoyed the fish chips and desserts, but last visit I tried the salt and pfeffer calamari and it was really terrible. the coating was not boiled through (pallid, soft, raw crumb) and the squid lying underneath was tough and rubber-like, as if they were previously boiled, frozen up before immersion in crumbs and someone forget to actually cook it again with the crumb coating. too busy in the kitchen apparently speak for me with everyone and have actually cooked it! I sent a detailed e-mail that had to go to the main department of the chain that never reacted or was recognized. never returned after.
