The plumbing issues with the taps have been ongoing for months, with cold water taking an excessive amount of time to come out. The hotel's wifi is unreliable, often failing to connect. The breakfast offered is insufficient, resembling more of a snack for a child rather than a meal for adults. I regret not spending a little extra to stay at a different hotel across the street. The lack of concern from staff during a fire alarm was concerning, as they remained inside while guests were left outside in the cold. This business should seriously consider shutting down, as it prioritizes advertising over providing a satisfactory experience for guests.
This restaurant is now under new management since February 2019, as the manager informed me during our disappointing dining experience. Therefore, any reviews prior to that date may not be accurate. Our experience was very poor overall. For instance, I ordered beef but was served chicken instead. Additionally, when the menu stated "with cheese," it meant a processed cheese slice was included. A 15% gratuity is automatically added for inattentive service by staff members who seemed unsure of their duties. Although the venue itself is nice, improvements are needed in various aspects such as the menus (photocopied pages stapled together) and staff who appeared uncomfortable with customers. While I appreciated the manager's efforts to address our concerns, much work needs to be done to enhance the overall dining experience.
I ordered the pickerel, but there were too many bones so I had to stop eating. It ruined my appetite. The barley soup was tasty, although a bit salty. My wife tried the prime rib and thought it was delicious. The decor was outdated and the dining room was too warm. Overall, it was an okay experience, but I probably wouldn't go back.
Don't miss out on the opportunity to dine at the Senator when you are in Timmins. Its classic menu makes it one of my favourite places to dine when I'm in town. A couple of days ago I stopped in, hoping to order the pork tenderloin in a port and cherry sauce, which had stuck in my mind from my last dinner, when I had ordered the decadent and delicious chicken crusted in hazelnuts in a Frangelico sauce. The menu had been revised and the tenderloin had been taken off (although I lobbied to get it back on for my next trip), and there was a new risotto dish on the menu: with green peas/petit pois, forest mushrooms, grana padano, and lemon zest. I ordered that and was pleased that I did. It was beautifully prepared: the risotto was beautifully cooked and not overdone, the petit pois and mushrooms retained their flavour and firmness, which gave it a real freshness, but it was the lemon zest (it's always the little things that make the biggest difference) that made all the difference. Grana padano cheese can come on very strong and overpower the dish, but the lemon zest balanced it out and made it feel very light. This is a dish with real star power! Pair it with a nice light italian red for a delicious meal. Share the risotto with a friend (it's a good-sized portion, so I had left-overs for lunch the next day) and you can even order the bocconcini salad! I hope you enjoy your next meal at the Senator as much as I do all of mine.
Great service and food. Nice relaxing atmosphere with quality menu. Meal was hot and gad a great presentation.
