We always loved the Red Oak catering of this restaurant. The menu was always varied (Pasta, fish, meat, vegetarian choices) and the dishes were always delicious. However, the food has become so bad that we never go there any more. However, on two occasions in the last year, we had no choice but to go with friends. I pitty the tourists ordering Jigs Dinner and believing what they receive is really a Newfoundland Jigs Dinner! And the Cod Toungues taste no more like cod tongues than shoe leather dipped in shake n' bake. Our meal was so bad that I sent back everything they served in my order. Our friends did not fair much better with the things they ordered. Our table received no bill because the meals were so bad. But, that is so sad to see because the restaurant and view and serving staff are all great! However, someone needs to hire a chef who can serve authentic Newfoundland dishes if they are on the menu and bring back the old menus that was sooo delicious. Such a disappointment now.
The Rooms Cafe is located in the Rooms Building with lots of outdoor parking spaces. The Building houses the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Rooms Cafe possibly provides the best view for the harbour of City of St. John's. The food is fine and the price is reasonable. The interior decor for the Cafe is nice.
We really enjoyed our lunch at the cafe on the 4th floor of The Rooms museum/art gallery. Service was friendly and prompt even though they were very busy. Delicious dishes, our group especially enjoyed the chowder and the smoked salmon sandwich. It was a sunny day and the view of St John's and the harbour was exceptional!
Am from St. John's (visiting from Ottawa) and was there with family. This was our first time - and my last. Ditto on every comment Lia made above, plus had to ask 3 times for a coffee. Never going back. Will concede, however, that the view was great - but, if you want the view, it's free on the observation area on that floor - don't waste your money on the cafe: walk down the hill to Water or George streets to eat at an attentive/good restaurant (likely for half the price).
