The Fish Depot - St. John's

In Newfoundland when they say fish, unless otherwise specified, they really mean cod.

I was on the search for fresh lobster to take home to Ontario and this place came with multiple recommendations. I was received and assisted with great hospitality in the store and my questions were received and I felt I received excellent advice. I purchased a live lobster that was packaged for transit onboard my flight to Toronto. We cooked the lobster that evening and it was perfection! I have also learned that they will pack up and deliver their product for transit to hotels.Highly recommend and will visit again!

Recommended by our hotel,we arrived 30 minutes before our reservation only to wait an additional 35 minutes. Three other couples who arrived after us and whose reservations were after ours, did not wait and were seated immediately.When we were at last seated, we were put in a giant booth that easily could have held half the Canadian Army. The "view" from our cavern was of the staircase going upstairs and the stations where dishes were dumped. Waitresses at this restaurant, must be in training for The Olympics as they raced by constantly, literally giving us a headache from motion sickness. I ordered cod cheeks to try them out, which arrived some 40 minutes later. Think KFC nuggets...cold nuggets.At this point, we had had it. Cancelled the rest of our order, paid our bill and left. One of the worst restaurant experiences we have encountered in recent history. Horrible table, noisy freeway-like constant motion and blah food.This was supposed to be a great restaurant. It wasn't on any count.

Got this place from a local who recommended it to us. Had a hard time finding it due to scaffolding in front of it due to construction on the building it is located in. Not much when you get inside, but the owner knew his stuff and was great to deal with. We got some great tasting salmon and halibut from him.

Excellent fresh halibut , cod and c salmon. We also purchased some salt cod with which to make fish cakes. Knowledgeable, helpful , real.
