Dropped by this Trotksyite bookstore/coffeeshop in early November.
I wish I read the Yelp reviews before going in and purchasing anything.
I am always on the hunt for vegan food options in all the towns we visit. I came here with my 'non-vegan' mom and we shared the roasted red pepper sandwich. It was by far one of the very best things I have ever eaten in my entire life! The energy of this place was so calm and inviting, I will come back to salt spring just to eat here! I wish you had a place on the mainland as well.... amazing!!!
It was with great anticipation that I came to Morning Side Cafe, Having made the trip to Salt Spring specifically to check out their vegan cheese. My experience was quickly soured however after placing my order. My coffee was served to me in a paper cup, which broke my heart. I do not support drinking coffee out of paper, and had already opted out of my morning coffee earlier in the day because I had forgot my travel jar in the car. I also simply hate the feeling of the paper on my lips and in my hands, so I politely asked if my coffee could be transferred into a mug..... and that is when I was hit sharply with a shockingly self righteous attitude, and this is how it went..I was blamed for wasting a paper cup (excuse me for assuming that the beverage I ordered to stay and drink in your cafe would be served in a mug) I was then refused a mug, because of the water and soap it would waste to clean it. I was told I should have brought my own cup. Which I purposefully left in the car knowing we would be dining in, again my bad for assuming I would be served in a mug. If you are truly concerned about water conservation I highly recommend not serving every drink you make in a paper cup (which I quickly realized was the case) Do you know how much water it takes to produce paper? A lot more than it takes to wash a mug. My friends lemonade was even served in a paper cup! At least she was given a glass straw. Later when we asked for an extra order of bread the server was made to come back to our table to grab a napkin from the holder to serve the bread on. I’m assuming because it takes to much soap and water to clean an extra plate, so naturally a paper napkin is the better choice? And on top of all this rudeness, about halfway through our meal we started getting pressured to leave. I understand seating is valuable in a small cafe, but altogether our bill was over $200 and when we noticed two people looking for seating we invited them to join the table.I am in no way a perfect human being, but I do my best to live a life that has a positive impact on our dear planet Earth, and all the humans, animals, and plants that inhabit it. I chose not to engage with the woman who spat these remarks to me at the time, as I didn’t want to ruin my day with an unnecessary argument. I however will not be returning to this condescending environment. Which is truly unfortunate, because the food was delicious, and had I been treated with respect, I would have been happy to spend lots of time and money supporting and recommending there alternative cafe.I would like to note that the girl who was serving us at the table was wonderfully pleasant, and in no way deserves to be included in my negative review.
