With the encouragement of a coworker who said he saw a Food Network feature about Les Madeleine's as the only place in the US to get a Kouing Aman (or something impressive sounding like that), I finally went in today. A charming space, friendly staff, pastry cases decked with pretty goodies and a coffee selection that included, *gasp* espresso drinks and Illy brand coffee, rather than typical junky American drip coffee. I tried a Kouing Aman- ahmazing, these pastries are too dangerously close to my office- and I tried a Raspberry Macaroon. Indulgence. I've wanted to review this find since they were on State Street. This is as expensive as any Paris patisserie, where they place each pastel macaroon in a ruffled cup, then in a doily lined box that is tied with ribbon and an embossed sticker. When you eat it, it is almost a religious experience. No Oreos grizzled down the gullet! No Twinkies with a half-life of billion years! To eat anything from the ovens of Les Madeleines is to have tasted bliss. I can think of touted bakeries in other cities--Junior's in Brooklyn springs to mind--where the reputation far outstrips the quality. While the slc stopped and had breakfast. eating was excellent, service good and staff very friendly and helpful. this restaurant is a bit away from the main tourist area, but if they eat french type then try le madelines, they will not be disappointed
Loooved their madeleines. and all other terraces in the offer. good coffee, only negatiw the service is veeery slow, not the place to take a coffee when they are on the go.
Les madeleines is famous for bäck (and the kouing aman is still not to miss), but I finally tried lunch and it was just as good. the open madrider sandwich was a delicious blend of Spanish arome and was perfect with the addition of a beautiful gooey egg. lektion learned: don't eat here!
