It's an experience I'd like to repeat over and over again if I get a chance to visit Ilocos again. When I saw that Farinas Ilocos Empanada has opened a branch along E. Rodriguez Ave., I was definitely excited. On the Sunday I visited, I ordered 10 pieces of the special Farinas Ilocos Empanada to go. There was some wait involved as each one was cooked to order. I didn't get bored at all while waiting because of the open kitchen. It was interesting to watch the cooks prepare the empanada from rolling and flattening the orange wrapping, packing it with longganisa, vegetables and egg, folding it and then deepfrying. Each empanada was packaged in a brown paper bag and came with vinegar in a small plastic bag. I also got to talk to the store owner, Bryan Farinas, who was there with his wife and kids. They were very hands on in the operations of the store. They said that their bus company ensures that the freshest ingredients from Ilocos are transported daily to their branches in the metro. They also encouraged me to try the other dishes that they offer, especially the bagnet. We brought the empanada to a gettogether and people who have not tried Ilocos empanada before liked it a lot. It's best eaten right away to appreciate the crunchiness of the wrapper and its contrast with the filling. My only suggestion to the kitchen probably would be to pat dry the empanada after cooking so that it's less oily. I look forward to more of Farinas Ilocos Empanada. Now, I need not travel to Ilocos to enjoy its empanada.
I often dine at this restaurant, and my favorite combination is the special lomi paired with the special empanada, loaded with chili! I just wish they would improve their graphics.
I prefer this location over the one in Makati because it's much cleaner. My week wouldn't be complete without enjoying my favorite comfort food: Ilocos empanada and miki!
Having grown up in Ilocos, I can definitely tell what’s authentic. However, I felt the miki was lacking something—it might’ve been the atchuete or perhaps the terraces were missing. It could also be that the newly-made miki didn’t quite deliver the nostalgic taste I remember from my childhood, where we often made miki ourselves. That said, I really appreciated the way the dishes were presented; everything looked inviting! The miki came in a large cup and was quite sweet! I still love the menu options! The place was nice, and the service was adequate. I will definitely be coming back for those empanadas! Hehe.
