This is my local and it was fine before I became stricter about my consumption of fish sauce which relegated me to the vegan menu. Tonight I ordered the vegan pineapple fried rice with the 'special sauce '. I chose it because it had both tofu and vegetables listed in the ingredients list and my body was craving the nutrients. The special sauce appears to be a mix of vegetable oil and keens curry paste and the vegetables are bits of carrot, cabbage and tinned corn. There 's nothing green in this, no broccoli or bok choi or capsicum. Instead we have a meal that 's very cheap to produce retailing at $17.50 and it 's a joke. I get take away food once every six weeks right now and I 'm here eating this ****. It 's like a meal you smash together in your uni sharehouse. I 'm going to be so ill. Avoid.
Okay, while I'm not going to go as far as calling this an authentic Thai Restaurant (particularly since I have been to Thailand so I know what the restaurants there are like) this is still a pretty decent place that makes some pretty nice Thai Food. I ended up coming here on a recommendation of a friend, who has a nose for good places to eat. Mind you, have of the reason was because I suggested an Asian restaurant, and since we end up having a random number of people turn up with us, this place received the recommendation. I ended up having the curry, which was really nice, and they also have your typical Thai beers as well (which are pretty boring mind you). It's a lovely place and certainly worth a meal, though they don't split the bills, which means it does lose a point.
I found myself working late in a nearby and needed a dinner solution that would be quick and well priced. Thank goodness for Yelp because without knowing the menu I could place an order over the phone based on what others had recommended. We got veggie fried rice, fish cakes and chill basil chicken because every Thai place seems to do a version so I figured I was safe in asking for it). Told it would be ready for collection in 15 minutes, I walked down to the shop about 7 minutes away) and it was ready when I got there! Super fast and fresh and for a reasonably priced $33) dinner for two it was just what we needed to get through our late night work session.
Mai Thai is in a great spot on Lygon Street in Brunswick East... Why? Well, for the simple fact that it's across the street from me! Nah alright alright... It's a few doors from Mr Wilkinson so it's perfect for pre or post drinks dinner. I've had takeway a few times and eaten there once with mates and the food as well as the service have been great on all occasions. I always go for the special fried rice w/ chicken no complaints yet! I've had the prawn dumpling once as well and they were good. My housemate's had the chicken cashew nuts and green curry w/ rice I think and he was pretty happy with it so all good. The meals will set you back in the mid $10, which is not too bad. Make sure you check it out if you're in the area.
