Helen's - Machias

Food is not what it used to be. Not worth going to this restaurant anymore. Food was mediocre at best. (8/12/09)

Absolutely terrible experience. We waited half an hour for our food, and the waitress seldom checked on us. The food was bland and tasteless, and it was way too expensive for such poor quality. We made a reservation the day before for a party of 12, which seemed to draw an excessive amount of attention to them. Our meals arrived at odd intervals, with half of our group getting their food 25 minutes before the rest. There were no apologies for the hour and a half wait. I left completely disappointed and can't fathom why anyone would choose to spend their money at this restaurant.

I had pancakes that were only mediocre at best. There wasn't any real maple syrup available. The service from the waitress was not very attentive. I also tried a piece of lemon balm but didn't enjoy it and ended up discarding it. Additionally, the restaurant had a very strong Republican atmosphere, which made me feel quite uncomfortable. I won't be returning.

I had been away for a while and recently returned to Machias, only to be amazed by the changes at Helen's. The same favorites I loved as a child are now even better, if that's possible. The staff is very attentive, and the seafood is incredibly fresh, prepared in ways other than just frying. And the cake... well, it has even more ingredients now, which is a great addition!
