The prices are outrageously high for what you receive, which mainly consists of overcooked, over-fried, processed items. As someone who bartends and frequently cooks for customers, I can confidently say that nearly everything served here likely came from a bulk freezer bag. For instance, $22 for halibut and chips seems excessive. The fries are obviously frozen, the coleslaw is drenched in an overly sweet, thick sauce, and the halibut, while decent, consists of only three small pieces. The tartar sauce was not good either. The jalapeño poppers, priced at $10, seem to be a wholesale item from places like Costco, overcooked and paired with ranch dressing that came straight from a Sysco shipment. Virtually nothing here appears to be fresh or made in-house. I feel for the staff, as they are tasked with selling overpriced, processed meals while keeping cheerful. The owners seem to take no pride in what they’re serving and should be embarrassed by it. This location feels more like a cash grab for tourists than a genuine dining experience.
When we entered, the restaurant was mostly empty, and Terry himself greeted us with a warm smile. After we settled at a table, he took our drink orders, and many of us opted for beers. One of my friends, who is a beer enthusiast, asked for recommendations, and Terry kindly offered him a sample, which helped him make his decision. Now, let's talk about the food—that's where this place truly excels. The menu is small, seemingly handwritten and photocopied, but it offers various types of fish for the beloved fish and chips. Naturally, we all chose to go with halibut since we were in Alaska. I also ordered a fantastic clam chowder that many at my table enjoyed as well. Everyone was raving about the fish; it was perfectly battered and light—an absolute delight in every bite. I would have loved to indulge in the fries, but it was still Lent, so my friend ended up enjoying those on my behalf. What a sacrifice that was! I paid around $ for my meal and drink, and I can confidently say it was one of the most satisfying meals we've ever had in Seward, and quite possibly in all of Alaska.
If you're in search of fresh seafood, I recommend looking elsewhere. The rice and vegetables were decent, but I would rate Terry's at just 2 stars. Despite being so close to a source of fresh fish, they seem to miss the mark. The prices are not as low as advertised on Yelp. For just a couple of dollars more, I'd suggest going to Chinook across the street or trying the pizza next door. Even the chowder was disappointing.
Finally found a good fish place in Alaska. Who knew it would take so long? Prompt service, lovely waitress, and perfectly cooked food. I would just say the crust on the fried fish seems a little thick, not as fluffy, and fries aren't as to die for. But the fish is cooked perfectly for the baked dishes, and the crab is amazing.
The one star is obligatory but also for the awesome and welcoming waitress who greeted and served us. Without her, and if I could, this place would get zero stars. We ordered the halibut plate and the rockfish plate, respectively. Both were cooked to a crisp; extremely dry, battered too heavily, and hard. I suspect we both got the same fish because it tasted the same off both plates: like grease. And the prices were bananas! I mean, it's small town Alaska so you have to expect that ... but $21 for a plate of overdone and awful fish and chips is just highway robbery. Keep the waitress, fire the cook. Have some pride in your business, people.
