The meal includes rice, mackerel, tamago (Japanese omelette), miso soup, pickled vegetables, and various small side dishes. The fish was flaky and moist, and the entire set was comforting and satisfying. We also ordered the pork belly omurice, which was served with a nice side salad. While the pork belly had a nice crispness, it was slightly drier than we would have preferred. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and features a small patio. You can call ahead to make a reservation.
Azay is a fantastic hidden gem in Little Tokyo. I highly recommend arriving early if you want to enjoy the full menu, as items tend to sell out as closing time approaches. We tried the eel plate (I can't remember the exact name), the daily bento featuring salmon (the protein varies each day), and the salmon chazuke. Everything was portioned generously for the price, and the ingredients were top-notch. The omurice looked incredible, but unfortunately, the table next to us snagged the last order of the day.
My friends and I visited this restaurant for dinner after browsing through Little Tokyo. We arrived just five minutes before opening at 5:30 and were seated immediately. I recommend making a reservation if you can, as it quickly became busy and their outdoor seating is limited. The owner was very friendly and helpful, offering us recommendations and letting us choose between hot or cold water or tea. We ordered the sukiyaki from the regular menu and the black cod dinner set from the dinner menu.
Really great and friendly staff. Food was delicious and fresh. Awesome job on the duck confit. You get a little worried when a restaurant offers 2 varying styles of cuisine in one location but it just shows that the culinary background training is on point for both. By keeping the menu limited it ensures they deliver on each dish promised.
Definitely a great meal in the Little Tokyo area. The Japanese Breakfast was perfect and each little side dish that came along with it was amazing. Small restaurant and at the time of visit only had outdoor seating available. Definitely will come back to try the other items on the menu!
