Beseme - Lewes

There is a bartender and part-owner here, a young man, who has, on several occasions, been unreasonably rude. Most of my friends have agreed that they will never spend their money at Beseme again.

If you're looking for a delicious dinner, don't miss the beef stroganoff crepe. The soups are fantastic as well; we've sampled several, including mushroom chestnut, squash, and pear, and they are all homemade. The owners are friendly, hardworking, and always eager to ensure their customers are happy. Beseme has been open for nearly two years now, and the food is truly wonderful. The prices are quite reasonable too. And don't forget, Monday nights are comfort food night—make sure to try their meatloaf. Some locals at the bar while I was there even called it life-changing!

Beseme has a charming atmosphere, but unfortunately, not much else to recommend. The $18 Moroccan Shepherd's Pie looked quite appealing on the menu, advertised as containing ground lamb, spinach, and mashed sweet potatoes. However, when my dish arrived, there was no spinach to be found. When I asked the waitress about it, she seemed unaware that spinach was supposed to be included. After checking with the chef, she returned with a nonsensical explanation that the lamb had been cooked with spinach. But spinach isn’t an oil or seasoning; it’s a vegetable that was supposed to be part of the dish. Regardless, there was no hint of spinach in the meal at all.

Among the main courses is a Beef Stroganoff crepe filled with mushrooms, burgundy sauce, and sour cream, served alongside baby carrots and haricots verts. Don’t miss the lemon crepe dessert, bursting with citrus flavor, which pairs wonderfully with a good cup of tea or coffee. The entertainment showcases many well-known local performers, including Ed Shockley, and the music is perfectly set at a volume that allows for pleasant conversation throughout your meal. There's also a quaint little bar that attracts both locals and tourists. In the winter months, it offers a cozy escape from the cold, dark nights at the beach, while during the tourist season, it transforms into a vibrant and lively spot to enjoy.
