We decided to explore the village(s) of Laufenburg on either side of the Rhine (part in Germany, part Switzerland), and had a wonderful walk around exploring the lovely lanes, old architecture and little shops, but when we got hungry we had a wonderfully authentic Greek meal at Restaurant Athen just over the bridge on the German side. Once you cross the beautiful bridge (closed to cars), turn left and the restaurant is right there... oh, those Souvlaki !
The food is normally very good, but the atmosphere sings, always. The place offers a prime location and drips with antiquities and authentically combines old Germany with a decidedly Greek culturally obvious infusion. The best dishes are the combos, though, the lamb cutlets, though tasty, are sometimes too dry. The gyros are also hit-and-miss and can be dry, unfortunately. The salads are excellent and very fresh. What is startling is that pita bread has to be requested, and is on the odd side. Normally, one would expect to use the pita to stuff the gyros, etc. Nevertheless, the charming service and atmosphere is transformative. Highly recommended and good value.
When you cross the Bridge you can smell the delicious Greek food and insantly feel like you just arrived somewhere in Greece. The servers are friendly, the portions are a good size and value. The herbs and spices used remind me a lot of my visits to Krete. If you are lucky enough to be there on a sunny day you can sit ouside along the Rhein. Really relaxing and enjoyable. You might also be lucky enough to receive the customary free Ouzo at the end of the meal. If you like Greek quisine give it a try...
I have to say that we loved everything about Laufenburg including this nice place along the river. If its a warm evening its very nice to eat outside, but it was too windy so we enjoied our meals inside. The food was really good!
Super fresh salads, excellent wine list. Service really good and prices make you smile. Reserve well ahead unless weather allows you to dine by Rhine.
