It took an hour for our food to arrive, and when it did, the chips were undercooked and my husband's fish was overcooked. The mussels were good but the portion was small. The layout of the restaurant was odd and it was difficult to find the bathroom. Overall, the experience was not pleasant and my husband ended up getting more food elsewhere. The staff seemed overwhelmed, but the young girl at the counter was friendly. This tarnished an otherwise wonderful weekend in Achill.
Our special birthday meal turned out to be a disappointment. We arrived at 6:30 on a Friday evening to find a new menu with limited options, such as open sandwiches, chowder, and mussels for starters, and main dishes like cod, salmon, or scampi. The seafood platter I ordered had mussels with beards still on, smoked fish that looked like scraps, and wilted salad. The chowder was watery and the homemade bread seemed like leftovers. The cod main was mediocre, and the side salad was simply a few leaves, a cherry tomato, and peppers without any dressing. The card machine wasn't working, so we had to pay cash, and the prices were higher compared to nearby pubs. Overall, the experience was disappointing compared to our previous visits when the food and selection were much better.
The restaurant is beautiful, with a courteous and experienced staff who adhere strictly to Covid protocols. Despite encountering some negative feedback, we were pleasantly impressed by the scrumptious food and affordable prices. The wine selection was excellent, and there was a wide variety of craft beers available. We will definitely be coming back.
Dined there in the company of the hosts of Ferndale Bed Breakfast nearby. They recommended the Chalet and we would certainly recommend it. Staff were very pleasant and efficient. The food was excellent. Damien Anne
Visited restaurant based on local recommendation. Location is good and we were well looked after by the staff who were welcoming and friendly but food failed to deliver on many levels . I chose off the Specials and had Fish cakes (Salmon, prawn and crab) and the best i can say is the salad for garnish and the dipping sauce were good. As for the fish cakes, they tasted bland, gloopy and greasy as if deep fried at too low a temperature and grease had penetrated, a nasty taste and big disappointment. My wife 's crab cocktail was fresh, tasty and well presented and enjoyed. Our main courses were both off the Specials, I had herb crusted hake and medallions of monkfish with a tomato based sauce (like ratatouille) . The hake was the best part, as fish was fresh and well cooked but spoilt completely by the addition of a sprinkling of dried herbs that looked like black powdered dust/soot ..far from the description of herb crust), monkfish medallions over cooked. My wife had black sole which was presented well and enjoyed. The side dishes again failed to deliver, overcooked carrots, mashed potato that was watery and barely edible and overcooked chips that tasted as though reheated. At end of evening the owner did enquire about the meal and when we responded it was Ok she responded with Just OK? but clearly didn 't want any specifics or dialogue.. It is expensive for what it is, great location and waitress was very friendly would not recommend or be inclined to return.
