The Tavern has just changed hands and to be fair the new manager had been there 3 days on our visit. Our group of 14 booked for a set lunch. The service was good. The house wine was very plain and wine drinkers should seek a better one. Our roast beef was terrible and several of our group had to order steak knives to cut it. In these days there is no excuse for serving tough beef. The manager offered us free coffee as an apology for the poor meal. The decor is very old and tired and needs at least painting and decorating in a theme to suit the wonderful location. I hope they improve over the coming weeks and restore what was a great place for a visit and a meal.
Called a mountain Schnitzel - bigger than you can imagine $29.00What a meal. I could not get through it all so had to take a "Doggy Bag" home for 2 more meals Well worth the $29Other party members meals looked small in comparison but where in fact good size meals. Will definitely be back
I came at the beginning of summer, on a weekend, as there was nowhere to eat around the area (unless you drive all the way back to Hobart, which is really a ghost town itself).Inside was quite dark, although it does have view of the mountain / valley if you manage to get a table near the windows. I sat outside at the front door of the pub instead, which was actually quite nice, as it wasn't too busy. I imagine that this could be annoying when the pub is busy and people walking in and out.I ordered a fish and chips. It was actually more than acceptable, and the price was average.I don't have any problem coming here again, since there is nothing around, and the food was OK.
If you're after a lovely, warm, inviting, tasty, meal in an ambient, well decorated, friendly tavern; don't go here! After driving up to Mount Wellington today in the snow (the first weekend of snow this season in Hobart, Tasmania) we had visions of a beautiful, warm tavern with roaring fire, a bottle of red and a magnificent steak. We ventured in, frozen to the bone, and asked for a table for 12 (7 kids and 5 adults) but we were abruptly told no. I asked why and the waitress (wearing a snow jacket and a scarf because it was so darn cold) just said "we are too busy".I looked around and saw at least 4 vacant tables and re questioned her as to why, bc I could see many tables available. I thought maybe we had missed the lunch cut off, but it was only 1.30pm. The waitress had re asked an Irishman behind the bar if we could please have lunch. After some time she came back and said yes. He was very reluctant to agree. I don't know how anyone, in the midst of a Sunday lunch trade, in an incredible tourist location, would try to turn paying customers away?! It's called profit, and obviously they do not care about profit value. What. So. Ever. The decor is from the 80's. Carpet ripped. Ceilings broken, rickety chairs, baby high chairs full of grime and grot. It's extremely cold even though they had a fire going. Our food was staggered and wasn't delivered in any set order. The food was the most repulsive I've ever had to pay for, in my entire life. My mother's chicken parmigiana came out cold; cut in half (for a 'half' serve) with lettuce as a salad, (as did my sister in law's) Her plate's bottom had dirty food scraps all over it!My chips felt like they had been re used over and over in the frier. It wouldn't surprise me if that was true at all. The food was repulsive and vile, and I will never return. The staff were rude, unhelpful and completely hesitant to accept our patronage. The location is a potential gold mine - it's such a shame that the owners and managers can't see the opportunity they have before them. Unfortunately for the Fern Tree Tavern, my family are quite well known in Tasmania and word of mouth travels fast. Here's hoping none of us comes down with food poisoning tonight. It was so bad, that I think it would have made Gordon Ramsay physically vomit. DISCLAIMER - I only voted one star bc you can't vote for zero! Do NOT eat here - keep driving back into the city for a meal!
Great pub. Nice small town pub feel. Good beers on tap. Catch up with your friends by the fire. The chips and wedges are great. But it's not really a restaurant so don't go here if you're expecting a good meal.
