The Old Court

I have dietary restrictions and cannot eat the extras that come with steaks. I decided to order gammon steak, which came with an egg, chips, and peas. Since I cannot eat peas, I requested an extra egg instead. I failed to inquire about the cost of the additional egg, which turned out to be £1.50 - equivalent to £18 for a dozen eggs. This felt like a rip off. The gammon and chips were just average and portion sizes were small. I will not return to this restaurant.

I was impressed with this restaurant in January 2023, but the last time I visited in August 2023, it was terrible. The staff were great, but the food was awful. We ordered a meze for two, but it was nothing like any meze I have ever had. We will not be returning. It was a terrible experience.

As a vegan with a vegetarian husband, it can be difficult to find dining options in the Forest of Dean area. Luckily, we discovered The Old Court Hotel which offers four vegan options on the main menu and two specials. I enjoyed the koftas, which were delicious and surprisingly similar to meat. I made sure to confirm that they were indeed vegan and was pleased to find that they were. For dessert, I had chocolate cherry cake with chocolate ice cream. Overall, the food was of great quality and the staff were friendly. The only downside was the lack of vegan wine available.

Old fashioned hospitality getting the basics right. Wonderful informal welcome. Then taken to our table. Plenty of staff on hand young, enthusiastic and really polite. Our waitress was Freya. Great food Thai chicken curry £16.50) and lamb shank in honey gravy £20.95) not cheap but superb quality. What a find.
