Kids menu is fine, with choices such as the Super Mario menu. It does help if you speak the language. While the food is nice, I need to comment on the very retro-ness of it. A hunk of broccoli, briefly cooked and crunchy, is what I would have expected to get in the 80's or 90's. But that could simply be because most of the visitors to Hagnau seem to be of a much higher average age than we are.At any rate, the price to food ratio is a bit highish for me. Otherwise, nice restaurant.
We come here every time we stay here (for work) and are always satisfied, The food is freshly prepared, and the fish is simply delicious. Service is rapid and very friendly. Do try the menu, which is seasonal and good value. The wines are local, we recommend the Müller Thurgau, (a wine which we normally avoid), the local version is excellent. You will find yourself heading to the Coop to pick up a few bottles....
We visited with family to celebrate my mother in law's 60th birthday. Firstly the positives (as the service, whilst bad, didn't ruin the evening!). The food was lovely - beautifully cooked Bodensee fish with homemade pasta and other yummy sides. The fish soup was particularly noteworthy. The view is also fantastic - sun setting over the hills - amazing light. And on a sunny day nice to be on the terrace, which is right on the lake :) the wines are all made locally (winzer being a wine-maker) and were also fantastic. The negatives (which brought my review from 5 to 3 blobs). We had specifically reserved a table for 7 people plus baby at 6pm. Unfortunately the table was just for 7 people so there was no space for the high chair and we were very squashed in and constantly in the way of people coming past - no apology and we were made to feel at fault particularly by the restaurant manager. The owner of the place happened to be sitting next to us and was friendly and helpfully moved our pushchair to the hotel reception when people came past. Unfortunately when it came time for baby (and me) to go home at 20.30 (!) the manager chastised us for being noisy as we might wake the older guests (I wish people were this vigilant about waking up babies in hotels....). I realise it's not always easy for restaurants when babies are there - they're noisy, messy and don't bring revenue - but if you don't want them there then this should be made clear when the booking is made, not when we arrive. In addition to the baby related issues, the service was painfully slow - the main courses took a loooong time to arrive and I had to point out to the waiter that one of the starters was missing. No one came to take drinks orders and we had to actively seek someone out to order more wine. Finally the restaurant was extremely hot - it was a chilly day (autumn already in august!), so I dread to think what it's like in the heat of summer. As I said at the start - go for the food and drink, but don't expect good or friendly service ;)
Very popular busy restaurant by the lakeside. Staff very helpful with limited English spoken. Food very acceptable.
We took the picturesque little boat from Altnau, Switzerland across the Bodensee to Hagnau for the evening. Our traveling companions had chosen the Winzerstube for dinner and it was wonderful! Our young waiter was incredible, describing dishes in detail and remembering the little nuances of our order. Beginning with a salad that included rounds of goat cheese wrapped in ham the meal just went from amazing to incredible. I ordered the steinbutt (fish) entree--a mild filet on a bed of tiny broiled tomatoes and shrimp. My companion ordered an array of local fish and ooohed and aahhhed over each piece. Looking out of the broad windows onto the Bodensee with lights and boats flickering it was truly magic. For dessert we shared a plate that included two scoops of chocolate mousse--one white chocolate and one dark...I can still taste it!
