Two of us had drinks with Tom Cat gin, made locally, and the other had a beer . The cheese board that followed was underwhelming. While the cheese itself was terrific, all the other items that make a cheese board pop were sad. There was a small dot of honey, some shaved almonds and sad dried fruit. We ordered a bottle of wine to go with dinner. Our server was young and very polite, but she was clearly geared up for a busy night. I had fish tacos. Like many folks, I adore fish tacos, but these were just adequate. The fish was fried and the accompanying veggies were anemic. Both of my friends were likewise underwhelmed with their food. If the Hardwick Street Cafe wants to up their game, they need someone in the kitchen with an eye on quality and freshness. Would I go again? To the bar yes. But otherwise my sights are set on some other restaurant close by.
Deep in the interior of Northern Vermont is an example of how the value added, localvore, foodie agriculture economy can accomodate the high aspirations of the movement with the cost consciousness of the frugal. We went for the art and were delighted to find the cafe. The menu was simple but loaded with options. My wife had the chicken and reported that it was fantastic. Often free range chicken can be a bit chewy, but this was well prepared and smooth eating. I had the cheeseburger and echo what others have said about it on this site.
Off the beaten path but certainly worth a visit. The burgers are delicious. Interesting offerings we did not taste included Brazilian Fish Stew. Quesadilla Specials cheddar cheese with bacon and apple slices and a side salad very fresh and surprisingly filling for an adult at lunch. Wonderful espresso! Lots of desserts to choose from seemingly made daily. Attentive service, quiet ambiance and scenic views out the windows.
Fantastic brunch. This was the bread pudding french toast with peaches and whipped cream. Usually I'm wary of ordering bread pudding as I find they are dense but this was a nice surprise. Even though it was way too much for me, it was airy and delicious. Not over done on the maple side and the peaches added just enough sweetness. Fresh whipped cream without a ton of sugar was also an added bonus. My husband had the vegetable and potato hash topped with an egg. Potatoes were cooked perfectly, firm without being mushy. Veggies weren't over cooked either which is refreshing as dishes like this get soggy as the day progresses. The over easy egg was perfection. Obviously they now have a chef who knows her stuff. Eating outside on a beautiful morning just topped off our experience. If your looking for a cozy place that's quiet and elegant without the elegant cost Hardwick Cafe The Highland Center for the arts is a must! Kudos!
First we had a wonderful dinner in the on site cafe and then saw Stephane Wremble guitarist, a jazz guitarist in the Django Reinhardt mode, who learned his craft among French gypsy communities and accompanied by a drummer, a secong guitarist and a base. In the past we had seen an excellent Midsummernight’s Dream in the same theater.
