I visited the restaurant while on our honeymoon tour of Austria last December. El Gaucho was the highlight of our dining experiences in Graz. We like eating at the bar but unfortunately, the restaurant offers only table service. And this is just not what you do in Austria....There are, however, a few tall tables near the entrance with our names on them. The staff was very accommodating and helped us settle into our fantastic tables ideal for people watching. We came early on this frigid evening in late December and the restaurant quickly filled up. The wine list was promptly presented and a short presentation about the steaks and the cuts followed. We selected a Malbec from the list; it was fantastic! A bread basket followed shortly after that, along with really great olive oil and sea salts. My wife chose a pincho and I went the safe route and selected a sirloin cut. The meat was expertly prepared and cooked to perfection. The key to El Gaucho is the quality of the meat served here. It's extremely fresh and of very high quality. The cuts can be chosen in three different weights (in grams), all of which are appropriately sized. I hate huge chunks of meat; I prefer it in small quantities but of superior quality and that's precisely what El Gaucho presents. The dessert selections were fantastic as well. They are not an afterthought here. At this point I can't remember what we selected but I remember it was really tasty. There was chocolate involved. As busy as the restaurant was, the service was solid. The staff is efficient; the waiters can be stern but in a good way. Let them steer you in the right direction. A fantastic experience!
I would give El Gaucho five stars if it wasn't for the very rude service. I'm an American expat from San Francisco Bay Area and I currently live in Graz, Austria. I have been to Argentina and my best friend is Argentinian so I have high expectations from an Argentinian restaurant that makes you pay an arm and a leg for their food. First of all, service was TERRIBLE. We had a reservation yet we still had to wait 15+ minutes for our table. The waiters and especially the waitress were very rude, uninterested and indifferent. We ordered two glasses of their expensive wine and the waiter kept coming around with the bottle and filling it up and charging me for it (without asking). One time he even poured me the wrong wine (another wine that I never ordered) which I nevertheless had to pay for. On top of that, my glass wasn't even empty, I still had 1/16th wine (half a wine glass) when he ordered another completely different wine on TOP of the other wine and he still didn't pour me a full glass; the old wine and the new one weren't put together 1/8th (one glass of wine) even though he charged me for a full glass. I'm giving this place one star because the meat is very good and quality of food is good, but my steak arrived cold and too **** (I ordered medium well, not rare). I would probably not eat here again even though I have been here TWICE and was planning on coming again. Based on this experience, I do not recommend this place. Our bill for two people came at more than €150 which is a lot for cold food and shitty service! No thanks.
Our experience at this restaurant was very mixed . We were guided to an outdoor table and the ambiance was pleasant, slightly upscale and somewhat lively on a Sunday evening. Service was very friendly ,however when we asked for a cocktail menu they announced that the bar was down due to maintenance and they had no liquor as a result, only wine. We then ordered soups , I was slightly disappointed that the baked oxtail soup didn 't contain actual oxtail pieces but dumplings . ' We ordered a T bone steak steak to share topped with truffle butter .the second disappointment was the steak which was not at all cooked to proper doneness (we had ordered medium rare , instead it was served medium well done. We pointed it out to the waiter who after some confused reactions told us that we would receive a replacement unfortunately however, they were out of T bone steak at this point and we were stuck with rump steak , which of course was cooked perfectly this time. We also received an explanation that the truffle topping had caused the steak to overcook (which is not acceptable . We received free wine and desserts because of the mishap. Side orders and the perfectly cooked rump steak were excellent .the also have a unique black pepper mill selection at the table which we liked. we agreed that we would visit again (preferably not on a Sunday night since we had visited on what seemed like their off day . Would recommend regardless .
