Planned this for 2 weeks in advance for a Lunar New Year's Eve dinner with friends. Been here once before a couple of years ago. Thought the food was good and reasonable priced, but service at the time was mediocre. This time we went back on a Friday night and was told to get there by 6pm and out by 8pm. We arrived. Place wasn't full at that time. Sat down and ordered our food. A middle age woman served us and took our order. We specifically asked for the Peking Duck first as entree, but this didn't happened. Instead our bean curd dish "Pipa Tofu" came first, followed by a second dish, stir fried watercress with garlic. We have ordered a fried rice instead of steam rice. But fried rice didn't arrived with the dishes. Next came the steamed Barramundi fish which the staff (boy) spilled the sauce all over the table as he tried to place the dish onto the table. No apology. Still no fried rice. So had to eat without the fried rice to start off. Next came the peking duck, already prepared. Then the fried rice, followed by stir fried prawns in egg yolks. Overall, the food was good. But the service was not. We didn't get our complimentary soups and desserts which come with the food at this restaurant. I believed it was short staffed on the night. It got busier after we sat down for 1/2 hour. For the price we paid for the food, which was $162 for 4 of us, it was not cheap. In Footscray, our favourite Chinese restaurant still remains as the Hong Kong BBQ House. HK BBQ House may look outdated, but it has character and the staff has character and more welcoming and friendly. The price is cheaper as well and food equally good. I would compare Golden Harvest to Gold Leaf in Sunshine and Gold Leaf is a much better restaurant with better food and better service and priced about the same.
We always come here for a feast and they always deliver excellent priced and tasting Chinese food. Living in the west limits the number of good authentic tasting asian restaurants which is why this place is a great find! The roast duck is one of the best and so is the Cantonese sweet and sour pork. Whenever we celebrate a special occasion we come here and it has never disappointed.
These guys have the best duck...ask anybody! Service can be a little slow but the food comes quickly and is always delicious. Love their special fried rice too. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for good Chinese restaurant and awesome duck in Melbourne's West.
