Located in a typical Balmain sandstone building on Darling Street, the ambience is cosy and not noisy like some Greek reastaurants; the maitre 'd was great fun, very warm and made us feel so welcome. The decor is pleasant with exposed brick, white leather chairs, tables not too close to each other, a wonderful bar with ambient lighting and stools to accommodate the overflow or for an aperitif before dinner. The menu is small ish but WOW is the food good! Based on a share or Meze concept we had the Spanakopita and smoked Eggplant all with pitta which were outstanding. Then we shared the Prawn Saganaki, fish of the day, pork and slow cooked lamb with a side of Horta (Greek dandelion leaves like Spinach) all absolutely mouth wateringly scrumptious. We did a bit of wine tasting and tried the Greek white, red rose wines by the glass; all from the Peloponnes area again all absolutely divine. We finished with a shared Baklava and coffee and the bill didn 't break the bank. And the chef came to see if we had enjoyed our dinner and thanked us for coming. All very civilised and we can 't wait to go back. This is without doubt one of the best Greek restaurants we have found in Australia and we lived in Melbourne for 9 years, but The Greek Door is 'out of this world ' superb!
Great food. Went with a group of 12 and thoroughly enjoyed the variety and freshness of the food. The spanokopita pie was delicious as were the kebabs. Would definitely return.
As soon as you walk into the Greek Door you are immediately welcomed as part of the family. The charm of the staff and the excellent menu can’t help but make you smile when you sit down. By far the best Greek food I have ever had, it was perfectly balanced and you must get the honey halloumi! My partner and I shared dessert and both agreed that it was a total highlight. We were lucky to meet Martina, the head chef! She’s so talented and was so generous with her time to come out and talk to us. This is definitely our new date night spot
My husband and I were invited by friends to try this Greek restaurant only a month ago for and were blown away. The head chef and owner, Martina is talented, creative and a generous host. We began with Greek margaritas garnished with crushed hibiscus flower just wow! The flavours were amazing. Moved on to a Macedonian red wine and then treated with a complimentary mastic liqueur. We had homemade small pita breads, octopus, saganaki prawns, chips with feta and slow cooked lamb. Every dish we sampled was sublime! Carefully thought out and so fresh. A modern twist on a not so modern cuisine. We have been back again since then and it has become one of our favourites. A hidden gem on Darling Street. A must visit.
Loved the Greek food here! Great atmosphere, awesome waitstaff and a passionate chef! We’ll be back!!
