We had to put up with a remodeling project going on that included banging, drilling and clanging all day. This was by far the worst hotel experience ever. Major thumbs down to this Historic hotel. Awful.
If I could give zero stars, I would. My wife and I went in on March 19, 2017 around 7pm. We had worked all weekend and wanted a hearty meal. I was looking forward to a decent chicken fried steak which they always make well. However, after sitting down, we saw a limited menu and our waitress said they were out of some things (chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches). I ordered a house salad and had two salad dressings to choose from, ranch or thousand island. I don't like either. The waitress said she could bring out oil and vinegar so I went with that. I also ordered a mushroom Swiss burger since you can build your own burger. They were out of Swiss cheese and they were out of French fries. Are you freaking kidding me??? I just got the 3/4 lb burger with mushrooms and no cheese. My wife ordered a taco salad. Our meals arrived and there were no mushrooms on my burger. I sent it back. The oil and vinegar jars were very dirty which the waitress pointed out so she said she would clean them. My wife's taco salad had ZERO seasonings and when the waitress offered some salsa or sour cream, my wife said yes to the salsa, no to the sour cream. Her salsa never arrived because the waitress got confused so she didn't bring anything. When my burger came back, it had mushrooms but also had two thin patties. This wasn't the usual hand made burger that I've come to expect. When I bit into it, it tasted and felt like chewing on rubber. One bite and I was done. I've never had a hamburger that was inedible so this was a first. After complaining about our disgusting meal, our waitress stated that the cafe was going to be turned into a Denny's and that the kitchen was not ordering any food and only using what was on hand. I find this appalling since there was no notice on the menu about the lack of items or poor quality. If I knew this in advance, I would have gone somewhere else. The waitress did manage to talk to a manager and the cost of my gross hamburger was removed from the bill. I told the manager that I would never come to the Hotel Nevada ever again with such stupidity on the owners behalf as to how they were running their restaurant in it's final days. And on top of it, Denny's is a huge step down from the cafe and I certainly won't go there either. I am assuming that this is strictly a financial decision for the Hotel Nevada and clearly a poor one. This review will most likely fall on deaf ears since the cafe is closing soon.
I spent a summer living/ camping in Great Basin National Park, and we would drive to Ely every weekend and eat here. I miss this place. Good memories. I love their burgers. I made it my goal to eat a different burger every week so that I could try them all. I was never disappointed. This establishment has really cool decorations. One of my friends highly recommends the chicken fried steak. I'd love to make it back here again one day, for old time's sake.
My motivation to try this place was location- I really needed an excuse to check out the inside of this historic property and didn 't want to just wander around casino with two kids. Came here around 11:30 am and everyone in party ordered something off the breakfast menu. Service was laggy at first, we had thoroughly examined our menus cover to cover before anyone even came over for drink order. I had a really simple order of Those Potatoes and two eggs sunny side up. Sadly, I got plain hash browns instead and had to ask for correction. I 'm not being petty, but I really had my mind set on trying the dish with such signature flare to it. I ended up thoroughly enjoying the jazzed up browns, once they made an appearance. Kids had a breakfast burrito and biscuits and gravy and were thoroughly satisfied. I also always appreciate full carafe of coffee left on table and a huge basket of creamer, so I don 't have to beg for refills. Props! All in all I definitely would say not a bad choice. Typical coffee shop fare, service can be spotty, but not bad.
