Honeymooned in Edinburgh from America with my cousin from Lindon, found this great place first night. We would go to another place but always ended up at Planet! This pub has to be on the top of anyone's must do if in Scotland. The staff were amazing we never once felt as if it wasn't our local. Had a wonderful time at quiz night with Miss Slack!! We won.. The music was always great every time we were in. Must try one of the cocktail shots... I would recommend Planet Bar to anyone going to Edinburgh. Thank you Planet for making us welcome and part of the locals!
It was a while back that I visited Planet Out, and I will admit right now to not noticing it was a gay venue until I was groped by a woman who was larger than my boyfriend. It was one of those evenings when you stumble into somewhere after a few too many lemonades so the memory is a little hazy but honestly, I do remember having a great laugh and a brilliant night. Drinks are £1 on Mondays and there was a pub quiz when I visited, although I'm not sure if that runs now. Great night regardless of your sexuality, and brilliant value for drinks!
There is one phrase which sums up why I go to Planet Out- Fanta Orange on tap. Anyone who has not been introduced to the joy that is a double vodka with fanta orange needs to get themselves here asap and taste the delights. Planet has some other things going for it, as it's the only bar in the gay district of Edinburgh that seems to be aimed at women/have a largely female clientele, which is good and bad- good because it's nice to have somewhere to see lesbians, and bad because then you see the lesbians and remember why you don't like going out on the scene. Oh but the fanta orange Anyway, whenever I've been recently the music is stupidly loud, and I even had an old lady moment and asked the DJ to turn the music down as nobody could hear themselves think but I was turned away. That makes one star less for Planet! The staff are on the whole really lovely and friendly, and it gets pretty busy so there's a good atmosphere. It's just so Gay. As in stereotypical, we're here, we're queer, get used to it gay. I'd just love to see a good gay bar/club in Edinburgh. As it is this is probably the best on offer.
Planet Out is a cool little place at which to start an evening, as I did the other night. The drinks are reasonably inexpensive compared to some of the competition which didn't stop my partner in crime wandering around nicking those left around by the unwary be warned! The music isn't too loud, but is good to dance to as a warm up before moving on somewhere else. Its got a pretty easy going atmosphere all round really, good to meet up with people and have a chat before hitting the dance floor at one of the more frenetic clubs nearby.
