This is the sort of cafe that serves a purpose but does not feel like a treat. It's used by families and elderly couples getting their daily hot meal. The decor is dark and the fittings are tired and mismatched. We were just delighted to stumble on somewhere open, as our seven year old daughter was famished after a walk around Cockenzie Harbour (nearby) and her judo club. We were well out of our normal stamping ground so we decided to give it a try. We were given a kind and genuine welcome by the waitress. Lasagne was about £7 and came with chips and salad. Husband ate it all without complaint and it looked nice. I had an onion omelette which came with chips and salad for under £5. Sadly the bottom was burned. My girl started off, enthusiastically, on her macaroni cheese and nearly polished it off before picking fault with it about a mustard taste (I think she was, by then, no longer hungry and wanting an excuse to leave the very large portion). It did indeed taste fine and, yes, it did have mustard in it. Okay chips but I hate getting little sauce sachets a bottle of ketchup would have been better. Good coffee. Us girls had tap water! There are a male and a female toilet. We found hem to be clean and a real trip down memory lane avocado green : DWill we go back? Maybe.
Been a few times for breakfast or brunch. Sometimes there is 3 adults and a 3 year old with us. Staff are friendly and interact well with the little one. The food is nice enough, tried the fish done in milk once and was surprisingly tasty too. Will use it again.
Ordered a breakfast, it was very nice and cannot complain about the food at all. But the tables are very close together and very flimsy, then my pet hate...a wobbly table! Some study furniture would tick the box for me.
On entering, the smell of stale fat is immediately off-putting. The menu is typical of a 1970s greasy spoon cafe. Unless you are into poor quality deep-fried snacks, I strongly suggest avoiding this place. The service is ok, but both the atmosphere and the food is unacceptably poor. It is a shame (and disgrace) that the seaside town of Cockenzie Port Seton does not have a single decent restaurant.
