Food was mid level. I was surprised when in 4 star hotel restaurant no wine list and staff cant normally open the bottle of wine. The red wine was everyshere on plates, on the table, outside the bottle. It wasnt only in the glass ..Food was on mid level.
What a disappointment! There was a strong personal component in our wish to return to the Tartaruga; we were last here in Capo d'Orlando in 1992 (a big year for this town) and amongst the memorable experiences of that year for us was a meal...in this famous fish restaurant, featuring a spigola al sale which went down in history. It wasn't just on the strength of a fond memory we returned here, however, but also the continued reputation of the Tartaruga as Capo d'Orlando's top restaurant, as testified by the rows of Michelin recommendations and various Italian restaurant guide stickers adorning the doors of the hotel. Well, sorry, but it all turned out a bit a of a sad disappointment. As another reviewer (the excellent long one in Italian) has pointed out, the service really wasn't up to what you would expect in a place of these pretensions. For us, it wasn't quite that bad, but notwithstanding the jollifying efforts of the underling waiters, it was the somewhat surly maitre who set the tone. Worse perhaps was the fact that the fish the very raison d'être of this place was simply not that good (spaghetti alle vongole in the two-bit pizzeria down the street the next day was way better). All in all, a real shame. This place is living off a reputation it maybe once deserved, but no longer really seems to merit. For the record, the impressions here of the Tartaruga as restaurant are backed up by those we had of the Tartaruga as hotel. Supposedly 4 star, this aging hotel of peeling plaster, rickety furniture, unsmiling service and crumbling residents barely rates 2 stars in our book. It really is a great shame, and spoiled a myth for us.
