We live nearby and have been coming here mainly for it's superb location. The food has mostly been of a reasonable standard and at a reasonable price. Mostly the service has been very good with just the occasional hiccup. We have put up with the at times high staff turnover and at times less than a high standard of food. To-day (11/08/2017) we decided to have lunch at Mondo's rather than dinner which is what we have usually done over the many years. The pork sliders whilst reasonably priced were average at best. Basically cold with average buns and a definite undersupply of pork. But we could have overlooked this as we have done with other less than great meals here mainly due to good service that often makes up for most relatively minor disappointments. After completing our meals and wines I approached the bar to re-order two more wines. There were three young fellows finalising their drinks order and then they left. I was the only person then waiting at the bar. The young blonde female bar attendant then just ignored me and walked away. She then walked past me again and again ignored me and just basically went outside to what appeared was to clear tables. Either way, I gave up waiting as no other staff member even bothered to approach me or apologise or help. So we left. And there ends a long-standing and very loyal customer relationship. You need to put some management in place and supervise your required standard of service. I have no knowledge what this girls problem is but she needs to learn about professionalism. Because she sure doesn't have any.
Mondo is run by the Hilton. It's a pity the wait staff don't meet up to the standard set by the hotel. Staff seemed confused and spend too much time chatting amongst themselves. Food only average but views great.
We choose mondo's for there Oyster Deal on the Sunday 3-5pm. I arrived at 2.30pm and a group of us were meeting up. It wasn't that busy and we decided to go up and order the oysters, to be told that they had sold out. YOU can't sent out of a special that quickly when it's not that busy. This is false advertising, especially when this has happened on other occasions to other people on the table, which by getting there early they thought this would not happen this time round. As we all work in hospitality and tourism, this is not a good look. Either STOP the special or service it and don't falsely advertise it.
Looking for somewhere nice for our last nite, this place didnt look busy so thought would give a go as didnt feel like walking any further, first look is its a bit cafe style but seemed ok looking at the marina, first we had to clear our table, then you have to go up and order your meal (like a cafe) staff are very uninterested, to a point i dont think one word from them was exchanged with us.had Duck fried for entree (it was very very fried) and salad with calamari- bit soggy. hubby had steak (oh dear my young granddaughter could cook better) i had burger that looked ok however very over cooked pattie, the stir fried veg we ordered as a side i am sure were out of a frozen bag very ordinary, i could go on but on the whole we tried to eat what we could, wasn't worth complaining no one about that would listen or get any satisfaction from.all this wasn't cheap either, so was left feeling bit deflated on our last night.
So ok. That was down there. Can't say we've had a really good meal in cairns, so thought we might try out side the box and eat at Mondos. Was optimistic going in... not so leaving, with most of our meals still on the plates. It was pretty ordinary and thats being really generous. Its really not even worth trying to explain why so bad. Maybe lose the freezer for starts.Come on guys, your obviously paying heaps on rent. Learn to cook. You dont have heaps of competition.
