I have no idea what other reviews are referencing when they said they were not good. Since we were a large group, we tried many of the dishes. Will definitely return if I'm back in the area.
Really cute roadside place for grub, small business, locally owned : Very rustic/dated building. French Dip $13-14? came with a humongous heaping pile of homemade fries. If you like humongous very potatoey fries this is the place for you! There was literally so much fries you could make leftover hashes for days. Dip Au Jus was perfectly seasoned and delicious. The lady helping us out was such a sweetheart!
After hiking over at Storm King and making the long drive over to Rialto, my boyfriend and I were two hungry bears looking for something to eat when we came across Hungry Bear Cafe. Hungry Bear is a small, roadside little joint. The food was not gourmet but it satiated our hunger. Ordered the Bite Burger which had a nice little kick to it because of the jalapenos and pepper jack. It came with a massive amount of fries. Fries were bit on the oily side. We also got a cup of chowder which was a bit too chunky/creamy for me almost reminded me of gravy. The real winner was the apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Overall a nice quick place to stop by for food. Loved the little dollars posted up around the restaurant my boyfriend and I decided to leave one as well!
How do we get these places in Northern Virginia? Home cooked food and just great service from everyone in the restaurant! The prices are beyond reasonable! Husband ordered the hungry bear which was a omelette, toast and hash brown and I ordered half order of sausage gravy with hash and half order of French toast. Neither of us can now move to hike
This is a charming local greasy spoon. The ladies are sweet and kind. The food is delicious. It was one of the few places open before 10am on a weekday. Portions are more than generous. Pancakes are the size of a plate. The bacon was perfectly cooked- just crispy enough. The hash browns looked like they were hand riced and yummy, too. Cool old logging photos on the walls add to the local flair. If you want the speed of one of the logging trucks zooming past, may not be the stop for you. If you are looking for a little gem that others may miss, pull over and have a coffee.
