This time we ordered and within 1 minute, one of the family wanted to change the order, we went up to the counter immediately and were told can't change now. We said to just add the shrimp, scallops and onion rings to the plate and forget the change from haddock to halibut. We would pay the more expensive, which was considerably more than the originally ordered. They wouldn't budge, so needless to say we will not return.
The fries were super delicious, the fish was also excellent. I ordered a double halibut and it was really big! Though not cheap at $25. We also ordered a double Cod which was also good at a more reasonable $17. The deep fried clams were also good, but also quite pricey.
Our last three experiences have been terrible - like day to night. My eggs tasted like fish; their bacon is limp, under-cooked, and also reeks like fish. To bottom it all out; I was served coffee in a dirty mug. There was one waitress - it looks like they have a different one each week - and we waited so long for initial service I had to ask to be served. Then we got mugged. By the fifth rate food coffee served in a dirty used mug. Used to be tops for breakfast; we were regulars.. I avoid it now.
I'm English and my husband is Irish, so living in Canada it has at times been a struggle to find authentic, tasty, value for money good old fish 'n' chips and Halibut House is the best in the whole GTA in our opinion! We go there all the time and have never been disappointed. The fish, whether Halibut, Cod or Haddock, is perfectly cooked and always fresh (they change the oil every day unlike many other restaurants), the batter is crisp but light and the fish perfectly tender. The chips are PROPER chips, not the usual French fries served elsewhere which are just not authentic at all. They offer all the correct condiments including brown sauce and malt vinegar, service is absolutely impeccable and very quick (have waited 4 times as long in fish 'n' chip shops in the UK for worse food). To top it all off, the prices are unbelievably good, with lunchtime specials big enough for anyone at around $6 for fish and chips with a cool drink etc. If you want authentic, tasty, fresh, fish and chips, this is the place to go!
It's cheap so decent value but I don't think their fries are hand cut. And come on, they give out packets of tartar sauce. At least make your tartar sauce. Much prefer Bluenose just down the street
