I had the fish and chips which again looked great but the fish had a funny taste to it and I don’t think it was fresh. It was a shame because sitting outside was really nice.
After reading numerous reviews on the web for Sunday lunch in York we decided to chose Middletons to which we were very pleased , the surroundings, staff and food were first class, we had the 3 course option at £30 with complimentary glass of fizz and a drink each to which we could not complain about anything, the service and food were first class and we both thought true value for money, if anything the only slightly cheeky thing that they don’t tell you is that they add a 10% service charge on to your bill but other than that all was good.
The hotel is in a lovely peaceful spot with well tended gardens. We were greeted by the pleasant reception staff. Our visit was for afternoon tea which was a huge disappointment. Three small finger sandwiches on white sliced bread all pretty tasteless except for the overwhelming piccalilli on the ham sandwich. No salad garnish. The scone was really good but the other cakes were bland and didn't taste fresh. The pastry case was soft and the flaky pastry mille fleur soft and chewy. We have had numerous afternoon teas but sadly this one was very disappointing and certainly overpriced. Not the birthday treat I expected.
Had afternoon tea today with a Travelzoo deal. Nicely presented and adequate . Table nicely set with linen cloth and napkins. No real complaints but didn’t think it was worth anymore than the voucher price.
Afternoon tea review after picking up a voucher off TravelZoo... First off the staff were very friendly and asked all the appropriate questions about allergies and when we'd like our tea served. I do get the half glass of prosecco comment in another review. Sandwiches were finger shaped salmon cream cheese, Yorkshire ham picalilli and cheese and pickle. All perfectly acceptable without standing out too much. The scones were nice, I thought home made due to being slightly warm and crisp parts from the oven. My criticism of the scones was not a lot of cream and jam, but also the jam was not local when there are so many lovely jams round here. The cakes were a mixture of macarons, strawberry tart, chocolate slice and a ginger sponge. All acceptable and went down a treat. All in all a good experience. Would I come again, maybe, but also might look around first.
