We started off w the chicken livers with polenta and the mussels. This was my 2nd time eating chicken livers, my first time was horrifying (gritty mess) but I figured this would be the place to try them again. They were soaked in buttermilk and battered and deep fried in pork fat. They were good, but the polenta was the star of the plate for sure. Creamy and dee lish! We then got the Roast Burger and the impossible burger with rosemary fries. I'm not a fry person, but these fries were to die for. Thin, crispy and craveable. The Roast burger was perfectly cooked to medium and was juicy and again craveable. The impossible burger was served with like a big mac sauce. After I ordered some more sauce on the side , it also became cravable. This is the place to go for happy fo shizzle!
Fine dining in Detroit. Aged steaks and chops spell perfection for our annual group of Baseball Pilgrims. This particular year we were nine. We were staying at the Westin Book Cadillac Detroit and right downstairs was Roast. One of, if not the best, steakhouses in Detroit. Being our first night in Town this was the right choice. Now these guys I travel with all originated from Brooklyn, New York. If I thought I had a taste for food, well, I must attribute a great deal of my experience and knowledge to these foodies. This was my 30th year of roaming with this guys and I have never been disappointed. The meal began with cocktails; generally scotch and vodka for most with a couple of ales and lagers. Then came a variety of salads, ranging from Caesar, Arugula Radish, and Chickpea. Finely presented and served. Our meal at Roast consisted of three aged porter house cuts, each one being finished individually and sliced along with bone prominently displayed. Finished from pink, medium, and to medium well to meet the desires of each carnivore. Sides of Whipped potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, Spinach Feta Cheese, and Mac Cheese were shared. Yes there were desserts after dinner drinks, too. But my memory failed once past the meal due to a significant food coma.
We got a tip from our Uber driver that Roast had a great happy hour, so we hopped over soon after checking in at the Westin. We were sad to find out that they take the seat at the bar rule seriously; you can only order food if at least one person from the party is sitting in a bar chair. (And there really aren't that many spots at the bar since the seats are bigger and roomy. However, we were eligible for the $5 wine while standing. There's one red, white, and rosé to choose from. At about 5:30, with an hour left of happy hour, a bigger group relinquished some seats, so we quickly ordered a burger and tacos to split. So glad we stuck around, for the burger was so good. I didn't stop talking about the burger the rest of our Detroit trip. The tacos were much less exciting, as they were a bit oily and fatty. The burger was a dream, though!
My husband and I were really in the mood for some steak so we made a reservation here and were able to get a spot same day. We ordered oysters to start. They were delicious and fresh. They were of the east coast variety. My husband ordered filet mignon and a side of brussels sprouts, I ordered the ribeye with mac and cheese. Both were cooked to perfection and the sides were flavorful and delicious. The sprouts were a bit on the salty side but we still kept some to take home. Can't wait to eat the leftovers!
This was one of the better dining experiences I've had in recent memory. My friend and I came down here for restaurant week and it exceeded my expectations. I booked a reservation for 5:00pm right when they open. We had some time to kill so we went around The Westin riding up and down the elevators. When it was exactly 5pm we walked through the glass doors and checked in we waited about 5 minutes for our table to be ready and were seated in a a booth where my friend and I both got a booth seat instead of one booth and one chair. I really liked this. This place is elegant without being arrogant. The lighting is dim and adds to the ambiance. The restaurant is decorated in warm tones and has a romantic feel to it. There were a lot of choices on the restaurant week menu and I decided on muscles, steak and the bar for dessert. The sides were al a carte and my friend and I decided to split the brussel sprouts and polenta. The muscles came served with crispy and tasty French fries on top and a dollop of a yellow sauce whose taste I couldn't place well enough to identify but it was delicious. The muscles were served with a meat broth on the bottom which was very tasty both by itself and even better when you dipped the house bread in it. The hanger steak was one of the best steaks I've ever had. It was charred on the outside and melt in your mouth on the inside. The pickled chili really added something unique and unexpected to the dish. The brussel sprouts were magical and I'd come back here for just them. I've never tasted any brussel sprouts quite like them. The polenta had a perfect texture and creamy taste. I tried the two together and the two together offered another intense and delicious flavor combination. The bar dessert was sweet, crunchy and salty. It had chocolate on top with a toffee bottom caramel sauce on the bottom with a toasted marshmallow and chocolate cookie shavings. Everything about this meal was fantastic.
