We ate in the restaurant on two nights on our recent stay. The first night the food was really good and we really enjoyed our meal. The second night was disappointing I had smoked haddock with potatoes, there wasn't much haddock and the potatoes looked as if they had been beaten up and thrown on the plate. Not very appetising. We did mention this and an allowance was made on the bill.
This is a very bright and comfortable space to dine, and the service was attentive when we ate during the week. It may be less so when there are functions on. The food was OK but not outstanding, the lentil and chorizo bed for my chicken was certainly a lot blander than I was expecting. The menu was not extensive, but there would be enough for most people to make a choice. If I had been nearer home I am sure I would not be tempted back.
I thought I would book dinner at the hotel as a surprise for my husband as we got married in this lovely hotel exactly 5 years ago. I emailed ahead of time and told them it was our anniversary and why we I wanted to book a table there. What a let down…the hotel has changed so much since we got married there in 2017. When we first arrived the receptionists were cold and not at all welcoming,we didn’t even get a happy anniversary from any of the staff which I thought was so unthoughtful. I explained I was gluten free and was given a normal menu and was told anything could be made gluten free. Great I thought, the food was horrendous.. I had a pie with different ingredients in to what was on the menu, the salad it came with was a couple of limp lettuce leaves and some potato wedges that were ok and the best thing on the plate! My husband had a steak and it was ok, certainly not worth the amount we were charged for though as the quality was not great. The poor young waitress gave us the wrong menu…I don’t blame her as she was doing the best she could and kept apologising for the mistakes. We were given a complimentary dessert as we had over a 30 min wait for dessert …great, checked the bill and we had been charged for it so again the poor waitress sorted that out on her own. There were two conferences on at the hotel and the staff were clearly overwhelmed. Such a disappointment, over priced poor quality food, lack of staff and just completely down hill. I pity anyone planning an event here as it’s changed so much.
We stayed at this hotel for two nights, and decided to eat here on the first night (Monday). Upon check in, we were advised to book a table, so we made a reservation for 6:30pm. When we entered the restaurant, it was very quiet, with only one other couple dining. It was really quiet, and the lack of music created a bit of an awkward environment. The two young waiters were very attentive, asking for our drinks orders straight away. We ordered the wild mushroom starter to share, which was very tasty and was a good size, considering we wanted to save ourselves for mains. I then ordered the Vegetable Goulash with pasta, and my boyfriend ordered the duo of pork. The ‘Goulash’ was not a goulash at all it was just spaghetti with tomato sauce, full of onions, baby corn, mushrooms and peppers. It was really bland and quite boring to eat however the portion was very large. The pork was very tender and tasty however the three small boiled potatoes and steamed veg served with it were extremely bland. There were only two veggie options to choose from, only one being vegan. On the up side, the desserts were very nice and sizeable. Service was quick without feeling rushed, and the restaurant did get a little busier as the evening went on. Overall, it was a very forgettable meal which is overpriced for the quality of the dishes.
