Windy Corner Cafe - West Dorset

We have been visiting Westbay for over ten years now and one of our favorite highlights is having breakfast at Windy Corner! Our boys, who are now 10 and 5, always insist on having breakfast there and it's the only place they want to go. This says a lot because kids can be a tough audience to please! The service is always quick and friendly, and the food is always hot and delicious. We have a special place in our hearts for Kirsty and the Windy Corner crew and we make sure to visit whenever we are in town. Thank you for all the amazing breakfasts over the years! I have been a patron of this café for several years, but unfortunately, my recent visit was disappointing. The lunch I ordered was overcooked and made with cheap, flavorless ingredients. The only enjoyable part of the meal was my pot of Earl Grey tea.

I recently enjoyed another delicious breakfast at this cafe. The portion size was generous and I particularly appreciated the option to have both toast and fried bread. The cafe is appropriately named Windy Corner, located at a corner with a breezy atmosphere. It's a great spot to grab a meal.

After about 4/5 years visiting the Windy Corner Cafe, I have to say that it has been steadily on the decline. The last straw came this week when my friend and I were ushered to a table in the back whilst 3 tables were in actual fact free but 'reserved '. The guys behind us weren 't so lucky as they were actually turned away! These 'reserved ' tables were all sea view, best seats in the house. Our table had a view of a fence and 10 or so wasps buzzing round which you had to try and seat as you ate your meals. Eventually the guests turned up for the sea view tables and basically nursed a cup of coffee for the entire time we were there. One table had one coffee between the two of them! We always have a biggish breakfast each and this has been a bit hit and miss lately too. One week raw sausages the next raw potatoes the week after that missing eggs? There always seems to be something these days. Unfortunately the standards have been slipping progressively for a while. This used to be our favourite place to go in Dorset but now it is way, way down the list. The biggest gripe is the reserved table thing. This is not the Savoy or even the Ritz. Its a café. Its a café turning people away so that people with reservations can nurse coffee for hours while they look out to sea. People that get turned away won 't be back.

We came into the cafe for lunch and sat down. We are both disabled and had to struggle to the table we chose which was out of the way so that our walking aids did not get in the way of others. While we were choosing what to have for lunch a waitress came and told us we had to move because the table had been reserved but the reservation had not been placed on the table. 2 able bodied women with dogs stood by with an appalling aura of smugness. There were plenty of free tables they could have taken instead. They gave an obviously insincere 'sorree ' (sic). If they had been sorry they wouldn 't have forced us out of our seats. We had to painfully struggle up and leave. We declined to sit elsewhere because we felt very humiliated and undervalued. This is somewhere, as locals, we have eaten at many times. We shall never eat there again. The staff at the cafe were remiss for failing to reserve the table. But we were penalised. If you want to go and eat somewhere where you will feel valued as a customer then based on this experience I would not recommend it.
