After a 45-minute walk over the mountain in the snow to the hate we were rewarded with fantastic views and a spacious and clean restaurant, but the food and the service settled. the beer and koks were walmart (the workers said they had no refrigerator, although they were outside -2. the food seemed to be tinted and the money was badly worth it.
The service was excellent! the experience was not so good! when they have luck to visit, they don't miss it!
Most people stay within the confines of the sphinx observatory and are missing out on the plethora of views that can be found by hiking across the top of the glacier to the monschjochhutte. Its around a 1-1.5hr uphill hike round trip depending on fitness,...at altitude of around 3,500m. Be careful coming up and going down immediately from the hut as its steep ice and quite slippery. The people in the restaurant are extremely courteous, welcoming and friendly with excellent english. They have a very decent array of food, meat/cheese sandwiches, soups, coffees, cake slices and other snacks. We ordered 2 coffees (which were lovely and came in a large bowl) a bottle of water, 2 cheese sandwiches and 2 slices of cake. Which i think came to something in the range of 30 CHF, which is no more expensive than what you get in most of switzerland. Also bear in mind that you are 3,500m up a mountain so this isn't haute cuisine. But what it definitely is a lovely hearty meal to energise you after the uphill hike while you enjoy the views.
In a refuge at 3600 m. I just expect basic but honest service: cleanliness, nice staff – since they chose that job – simple but good food, and this even more in a refuge that is easily reachable by train and snowmobile. At Mönchsjoch hut, not the whole staff was friendly, the food was very low quality, and prices way too high (a 1.5-litres bottle of water at 13 CHF!). Only dorms were ok, standard for a mountain hut. I enjoyed much better service and great food at refuges that are really isolated, like Goûter refuge and Capanna Margherita. It would be so easy to improve quality just a bit also at Mönchsjoch hut, it's only a matter of wanting to do it.
