Today’s mission: Sort through the riff-raff and find a good place to eat on the cheap. Our first try: Tony Cheng’s Seafood Restaurant. While the decor was nice, the prices kept it out of our ‘cheap’ mentality $15-$21/entree . Second stop: Chinatown Garden. A visit to the severely neglected bathroom and sitting in a booth that smelled worse than the docks in Greece and we were up and out of there. Our last stop was Wok n Roll. When you first walk in to Wok n Roll, you are greeted by friendly by Chinatown standards staff who quickly seat you in their 20 table dining area. The focus point of the restaurant is the sushi bar in back, but Chinese decorations are tastefully laid out around the restaurant. Don’t care about sushi or China? They’ve got an 80 projector screen for sports games. During this visit the light was low and the restaurant was quiet, which lends perfectly to a date night. I can say with confidence that this would not be so on Game Night or during lunch time as it would be busy as all get-out. The waitress was well knowledgeable and answered all our questions regarding ingredients and recommendations. Appetizers and drinks were served quickly with the main courses not too far behind. Service was top notch here: fast, courteous, and not once did my glass go empty Big Plus!!! . I felt the quality of ingredients was good, but the flavor overall was only average. The steamed veggie dumplings Appetizer were delicious, but not made on-site according to the waitress. My sushi was average at best. I’m not sure if it wasn’t fresh fish, or maybe the rice was off, but something about my sushi left me unsatisfied. The chicken in our Kung Pao Chicken was AWESOME! Tender, not at all overcooked, and flavorful. This is how all chicken should be in Chinese food, but few ever achieve this. The flavor was good, but should have been spicier. If you’re looking for drinks, this place has plenty of mixed drinks to satisfy all types of thirst. Beer is bottled only $4.50-$6.50 and of limited selection. Those lucky patrons who make it here for happy hour will find the beer prices drop to $2.00/ea M-F 5P-8P . Whiskey Wine are available, as well as Sake and a variety of hard liquor. Limited street parking is available for those brave enough to drive . Look for local lots or take Metro. Credit cards are accepted here and delivery is available in town with $15.00 minimum order. All in all this was a good restaurant by Chinatown standards. The sushi left something to be desired, but the Chinese cuisine was tasty and worth a stop in. I wouldn’t recommend this as a destination restaurant, but if you’re in the area it’s certainly worth a try!
Once you enter the door it?s a wall of plastic with a doorbell, can?t let Covid go but why not clean the bathrooms? Chinatown-DC health code violations every where! Only reason they received 2 stars is because the food was very good. That place still is nasty
The best place for Chinese food served hot and to order on a late Saturday night. Food had very generous portion sizes with decent pricing and a nice drink menu. There was only two servers on the floor and the restaurant fills up fast, but it's worth it. Nice place to people watch, you'll see a lot of DC natives out for a meal while enjoying the nightlife. Recommend you give it a try.
The place didn't look too inviting from the outside, but it was nice and comfortable inside. The soups were hot and tasty, and the noodles and chicken dishes delicious. Portions were very generous and service was fast and friendly.
A great lunch for around $15, including tax and tip, in a historical landmark site. The generous portions of Sesame Chicken and Bean Curd Home Style my friend and I shared were delicious. My $1 bowl of thick Hot and Sour Soup was the best I ever had. Conveniently located close to the Gallery Place Metro and Verizon Center and a short walk to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Portrait Gallery.
