I came here for dinner while visiting friends. I liked the atmosphere as soon as I walked in. It was clean and had a cozy, upscale feel to the restaurant. We were seated quickly and ordered a variety of food. There server was extremely kind and polite. He was quick with our orders and our needs. For food, we started off with arincini and burnt ends. I ordered the DLT (duck lettuce tomato) and my friends ordered fried chicken, fried spinach, jumbalaya, and some other plates. I got to try mostly everything and it was all very good. The seasoning and flavor was all really well done. One of my friends said they liked the seasoning on the fried chicken over southern in downtown STL which is a compliment. My only complaint would be the amount of salt and oil, but that is the type of food we all ordered. I heard their dessert was awesome so we tried a chocolate mousse pie which was good. I heard they also have an amazing bourbon apple pie that will blow you away. Unfortunately they didn't have it at the time. They rotate their menu based on season which I always think is a nice touch. l would definitely come here again.
Easily the best restaurant in Washington, MO. The ambiance is stark, very minimalist. You're not here for the pretty decor, you are here for good food and that is what you are going to get. After a day of shopping all the little gift shops and boutiques of Washington, it was time for dinner before catching the train back to the big city. I had sung the praises of The Blue Duck in Maplewood to my cousins and anxious to try the original one for myself. My cousin (by marriage) is a big hunter, so when he heard one of the specials was an Elk burger, he knew immediately what he was having. He had it prepared medium rare and it came with an egg on top. As a side he'd choose the Parmesan Potato Wedges. I'm not a wild game eater, but he gave it a two thumbs up. My blood cousin had never had a Hanger Steak, so she choose that as her entree. I joked with her, that I could not believe she never had one. Our server was very informative and explained in detail where the cut of meat came from and the history of the popularity of Hanger Steak. She to had hers prepared medium rare and and it was cooked perfectly. The side dish of corn was amazing we all loved it so much, we begged for the recipe and received it. Thanksgiving is going to be so much better this year. Her second side was fried smoked potatoes. Seriously? OMG! Of course, they were good. How could they not be when you combine smoked and fried with a potato. I've wanted to try the fried chicken for a while, so that is the route I choose. The menu said, thigh breast. The breast was boneless and large and the hight had the leg still attached. It was almost a half chicken. Mine came with two sides. I went with the Parmesan Wedges and Fried Spinach. Hey, it may be fried, but I got a green vegetable in for the day. It also came with a Black Pepper Biscuit. Yep, a biscuit with black pepper in it. I was in biscuit heaven. Two of my favorites, combined in one carb filled delight. Our entire experience here was 5 Star. I now see why some folks make the drive for this Blue Duck. Will I return? Sure, until then, I'll keep supporting my local TBD. When: November 15, 2017 Why: Dinner with the cousins
I picked this place in advance for Friday dinner because I thought it would be nice to see the river. As it turned out, we arrived after dark, and didn't see much outside except the sidewalk, street, and parking area. Once inside, it reminded me of Cleveland-Heath back home in E'ville: kind of an upscale-but-still-relaxed pub feel, a relatively limited but creative menu, and a friendly and knowledgeable server. *TH's meal: Blue Burger, bleu cheese dressing, fried pickled red onions, sautéed mushrooms, and bacon, on GF bread (yes, they understand gluten-free needs here), side salad, and cider. *JH's meal: Beer-Battered Cod, a premium side mac cheese, side salad, and 4 Hands Divided Sky Rye IPA. It was a very good meal in a nice atmosphere. I'd do it again.
This was a nice, relaxing comfort food dinner with the Missouri River across the street. It was a little warm for the patio, so we ate inside. But we were able to get a table at the front window, so we had of the Missouri River flowing by. I just wanted water to drink and asked if they had San Pellegrino or some other sparkling/carbonated water. The waitress said they didn't, so I said to bring me a large glass of club soda instead. Oddly (and lucky for me , she didn't have it on the final bill. I pointed it out to her (my intent wasn't to get a free drink , and she went to add it. But she said it rang up as no charge anyway. Nice. The Blue Duck lists fried pork belly bites as an appetizer, so I had to try it. So what is it? Basically fried fat sounds like state fair food. But much better. It was a plate of 1 inch cubes of pork belly (uncured, unsliced bacon that weren't battered but rather dry barbecue rubbed, and deep fried. So yeah, there was a good healthy center of fat, but the tasty meat and rub on the outside. All with a light crispiness, and a smokey sweet BBQ sauce to dip it in. A bit odd, but also a treat. House salads were good, if pretty much standard. Greens, feta cheese, grapes, onions, and a light dressing of honey chipotle vinaigrette that gave just enough kick to be interesting. The entrees were where the comfort food factor really came in. The wife's Kentucky hot brown was excellent. Smoked turkey, sourdough bread, smoked tomato jam, portobello mushroom, bacon herb gravy , parmesan, and sharp white cheddar cheese this is the menu description and it pretty much describes it. It came hot from the oven, savory through and through. My mac cheese elbow macaroni, three cheese sauce, braised short rib, bread crumbs, confit shallots also was really good. Actually a little rich with all that cheese, but generous with the short rib meat bits throughout. Almost forgot! Both entrees came with two slices of extra thick (1/8 1/4 bacon on them. They were actually thicker than I would have liked. It was more like a bacon steak filet than a slice of bacon. To finish it off, we got a (large slice of coconut cream pie. It appeared to be a homemade crust, too. This pie was delicious. Flaky crust, dense and sweet coconut cream that actually seemed to be layered. So good. An enjoyable meal for us, leaving us relaxed and satisfied.
