I visited Gravitas in DC with three guests, and we had a fantastic experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, without any pretense. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings, which was perfectly tailored to my tastes. The prices were also very reasonable. I will definitely be back!
The dishes were quite inconsistent. My wife enjoyed the heirloom tomato salad, which was excellent, but my Citrus Sriracha shrimp was rather bland. I also ordered the Yellowfin tuna tartare but found it unappealing. When I mentioned this to the server, he seemed incredulous, but I continued eating it despite not enjoying the taste. The linguini and clams were average as well. My wife had the Koji Marinated Salmon, which was disappointingly small—about half the size of what they showcased on their Instagram. After looking it up at home, I suspected they had indeed reduced the portion significantly, making it seem more like an appetizer than a main course. I chose the slow-roasted pork, which was decent—not great—but the portion size was satisfactory; it was probably the only dish that felt properly sized. For dessert, my wife had the peaches and cream and found it excellent, whereas my coconut chocolate mousse was not to either of our tastes. Midway through the meal, I asked the server for some bread. It seemed like everyone else had received theirs at the start, but I only got mine after I had finished my third course. Additionally, my wife ordered a $15 drink that was practically just the bottom of the glass. We noticed others with the same drink receiving a fuller serving. The restaurant was quite small with tables crammed together, making it difficult to avoid eavesdropping on the conversation of our neighbors. Overall, I was disappointed and wouldn't choose to return. Our total bill for restaurant week came to $257 before tip, which is still a fraction of their regular menu prices. Having experienced other Michelin-star dining, this place falls short in comparison. P.S.: After arriving home, my wife ended up eating two slices of pizza, and she doesn't usually eat much!
Gravitas is a wonderful 1 Michelin star restaurant, complemented by an incredible seating area, good service, and decent food. We visited Gravitas during restaurant week, and selected their 3 course menu. Right from the start, the hosts were kind and welcoming. They showed us to our table. It took some time for the waiter to appear; however, no big deal. He was very professional and polite. After selecting a few drinks and the menu, we got the bread. It was well made. Nothing out of the ordinary but we were happy. The heirloom tomato appetizer was a better option than the Thai inspired shrimp dish. It’s delicious basil oil worked perfectly and the tomato appetizer looked beautiful. The shrimp was a bit too raw for my liking and there wasn’t enough sauce. Yet, it had merit. The mains were a bit disappointing. I have yet to find a good DC Michelin starred restaurant that serves incredible mains. The roasted chicken was stew esque. Their supplemental wagyu was unbelievably tough. I could barely slice it with my knife. Felt a bit like a rip off never tasted such terrible wagyu (not for its flavor but for its lacking tenderness). Otherwise, their wagyu dish had some positives: I loved the panisse and you can’t go wrong with chanterelles. I wish their sauce didn’t look like grey mush, but it was tasty nonetheless. Overall, there was no uniformity in the dish a bit of flavor shopping by combining ingredients that did not unite into a single, meaningful dish. The desserts were great though! We thoroughly enjoyed their coconut chocolate mousse and peaches and cream. I forget the name of our cocktail but it was also an incredible choice. Overall, Gravitas fell short of expectations on some key dishes. However, the flavors were good, service was on point, and the dining room was gorgeous.
I was extremely disappointed in this place. Service was, for a restaurant of this quality, subpar. The food, while good to very good, was, unfortunately, not memorable. It lacked any punch and was very one-dimensional. The supplements over the set menu price were lacklustre. The cheese, especially, was not worth what was paid.Wine selection was very good and at a reasonable price for a restaurant so that was good.Overall, though, I cannot recommend.
