We were in Vila Real on an unplanned expedition. We came upon Loja do Covilhete for dinner. A very warm welcome. The menu was regional in nature. We had some of the local meat pastries as an appetizer. Very good. My wife had steak and I put together a dinner of various local cheeses and a salad. We had the local wine. This was an excellent find. If in Vila Real you should go.
A Lady in the street brought us by the hand to this restaurant, something I would normally run away from. Did she do us a big favour, a wonderful restaurant showing the local dishes in their traditional way. But with a Michelin three star class. The staff were superb and gave us a crash course in Port wines. The food was superb and the upstairs dining room had a touch of class in it's design and simplicity. This was a two hundred Euro meal with drinks for €24.50,that is not a typo I kid you not. Michelin star food at tiny prices,do not pass this restaurant.
We’re were only passing this restaurant this afternoon and got chatting to a lovely young lady who spoke perfect English, only to find she was not British but Ukrainen,.a really charming lady, who suggested we give the wine bar/restaurant a try. We did and we were not dissatisfied, we even met up with the same young lady as she was going off duty. We had an excellent young man serve us by the name of Nano, who gave us a few examples of what to choose, We opted for a stack of different Tapas so we could try different fare, we were not disappointed. If your passing the are pop in well worth the stop. We fortunately were stopping the night so we also had the chance to have a few drinks. The wine list is good and extremely well priced, even for the connoisseur of great Port. Very reasonably priced evening .......May have to give breakfast a miss tomorrow morning!
Just had dinner at the Loja do Covilhete. The restaurant is very cozy and modern (apparently it only opened recently). The menu is just amazing and out of the 12 different petiscos (tapas) we ordered everything has exceeded our expectations. I do recommend the Covilhete de Vila Real (typical local meat pastry). The menu just leaves water in the mouth, with an extensive range of Samosas, Peixinhos da Horta (Green Beans covered in eggs), etc... The Pica Pau was top notch and so is the Montalegre Wine...amazing attitude wine from the Tras-Os-Montes region. I couldn 't expect any more and can just highly recommend to everyone visiting Vila Real to visit this place... We where a group of four and ended up staying until midnight. Mario, the owner is also a great host. This place is a MUST!
