Today, the chivito is recognized as Uruguay's national dish and is often humorously described as a heart attack on a plate. It can be served on a plate or in a sandwich, but you'll definitely want it in sandwich form. This hearty creation features thinly sliced steak, bacon, ham, mozzarella cheese, a fried egg, tomatoes, mayonnaise, and green olives, all piled into a fresh roll with fries on the side, because of course, there have to be fries. Pizzarra’s Restaurant Pizzeria, located on Bergenline Ave. in Union City, is well-known for their chivitos and is arguably the best place to enjoy one in New Jersey. I highly recommend Pizzarra for their delicious Uruguayan pizza, pasta, Milanese dishes, empanadas, and even desserts like the indulgent chaja cake, which combines meringue, dulce de leche, whipped cream, and peaches.

The best Uruguayan cuisine! The meat pizza and desserts are absolutely delicious. Beatriz, the owner, is a kind and wonderful host. If you're in the mood for a fantastic meal, you have to stop by!
