TLP restaurant is a long-time fixture on the island, the only restaurant for many years although another small cafe has just opened. TLP's owner is Frances, one of the most gracious and hospitable Newfoundlanders you'll ever meet. She greets you with a charismatic 'my love' and serves delicious home cooked meals (we had the fried cod, of course). As we waited for our meal, Frances' husband David told us stories about his life on the island and away, which added to the authenticity of our experience. They told us this was the last year they will operate the restaurant. If so, we will miss this great place on future visits.
As of right now, I think this is the only restaurant in Change Islands - and worth the visit! The owner (and her grandson, who served us) were EXTREMELY welcoming and friendly - typical of honest Newfoundland hospitality. The food was wonderful. One of the people in our party is somewhat difficult to please, and he loved the food. The fries, dressing, and homemade gravy is worth it, and my kids devoured the fish and chips. Note that this food is reasonably priced but not dirt cheap, reflective of the time and effort that goes into home-cooked meals. I would definitely eat here again!
Very unique experience. Fish and chips was excellent, and probably the best we've had in Newfoundland. Turns out that I am not a fan of cod tongues (they actually are the tongue of a cod!), but they were prepared well. Service was very friendly.
It was the only place open in Change Islands. It might be the only restaurant. No matter, the food and service was excellent. We had generous portions of pan fried salmon and the star of the plate was the owner's homemade bottled carrots. I could have eaten just those! We were served by her Grandson and he was a delight. Well worth visiting!
My husband and I visited this restaurant for take-out while visiting the island. The female owner was +++friendly, made you feel welcomed (just like you knew her all her life) The food was priced reasonable and was excellent. Would visit again if ever on the island again. Fish and chips to die for - yum yum:) It was clean as well.
