Family run. Large enough servings to share.. Excellent lunch specials with rice and one other item for $5.00 from a good choice on the lunch menu. Not fancy but I think the best Chinese type food in Truro - definitely for the price..Has limted Canadian food
We ordered #3 and # 7 combos. Service was fast and food okay. I'm not a fan of their sweet and sour sauce but was good. My only complaint was the washroom. When I see a huge cobweb in the corner from the floor up at least 6 inches, makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like.
Hous Takeout has introduced a new menu with a variety of delicious dishes. My favorite among the vegetable options were the two eggplant dishes. One had a Szechuan (hot) flavor while the other was a milder option. The spicy eggplant had a perfect amount of crispiness and was stir-fried with hot pepper and various spices to enhance the flavor. The other dish had a similar preparation, but the eggplant was not fried. Although it was not spicy, I could still taste the hint of spice that was added to achieve the perfect taste. The unique aspect of this dish was that the eggplant soaked up the sauce, making it juicy and flavorful.
After trying this Chinese restaurant, I am relieved that I did not choose one with a lower rating. It is ranked as the best Chinese restaurant in Truro, but in my opinion, the food was terrible. The spare ribs were dry, the chicken in the chicken balls was unpleasant, and my plate was overflowing with sweet and sour sauce. Even my rice was drowned in sweet and sour sauce. If this is considered the top Chinese restaurant in Truro, then the other establishments should be closed down.
The last time I ate here it was terrible but I have read reviews that say it has improved so i thought I would give it another try. I must say that the food had vastly improved from what I had the last 2 times I ate here. I had the typical rice, chow mein, S/S chicken and garlic ribs. The food was hot when it arrived. The chow mein was tasty and crisp. The ribs were meaty and full of flavour. S/S chicken was good. This meal was the standard iteration and I liked it just fine. The rice was a bit dry but it was 2pm when I ate... not prime meal time, so allow for that. I would definitely try Hou's again. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very friendly. Service was quick and attentive.
