I was a little hesitant about ordering the carne asada since I eat it weekly in Texas....what a nice surprise. I will stop here again when traveling through Torrington in the future.
This place is very typical to the area, which despite it's large Hispanic population has a lot of really lousy Mexican food spots. This place is neither bad nor good. It's very edible but if you are from The southwest and have a high expectation for Mexican food this place will leave you disappointed beyond words... But if you're local it's just as good as anywhere else. It's fried, it's greasy, it's cheesy and devoid of anything resembling a vegetable.
Grampa Chuy's is a good place to eat. The servings are ample and the servers are nice. Sometimes the service is a bit slow, but I don't care since they are creating my dinner to my specifications. I like their chips... fried tortillas.... yum!! I get a little off-put when they bring my sour cream in an individual serving package. That would be ok for a fast food place, but not a sit down restaurant. Their quality is not consistent. Sometimes the dinner I order is exceptional, sometimes it's ok... one time it was not good at all. I much prefer this, even on a bad day, to Lira's which is 10 miles away. Chuy's menu has more variety and flavor.
I thought the food was really overly greasy everything seemed to be fried, even things that usually aren't (like tacos). Service was friendly and food was edible, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it drive to Lira's in Lingle instead!
Okay so the food was fantastic. The Carne Asada plate, to the 3 piece chicken. Our server Hope was a very polite and new so much about the food we were ordering. Fresh was an added bonus on all the dishes we ordered. Grampa Chuy's has defiantly made fans of us today. And we will be back.
